"Visited this hotel after a recommendation the exterior looks somewhat bleak and the rooms themselves are very basic. Comfortable definitely but basic. The location though is stunning, the service is friendly and accommodating and the food was superb! And as for value for money quite simply excellent! Well worth a visit!"

Located on the mountainside just south of Lac Cenis the first view of this hotel/bar/restaurant could easily deter one from entering but this would be a serious mistake. You need look no further than the 17 euro three course menu to enjoy good quality, well prepared dishes, including some regional specialities. I 'd recommend the tarte Beufort followed by the trout. (You won 't find trout any fresher than this it was swimming in a pool in the centre of the restaurant until I placed my order! . Excellent 'help yourself ' local cheeseboard and home made desserts. Would suggest ordering a bottle of wine although the house wine is fine. Breakfast at 6 euros is good. Enjoy your coffee sitting on the balcony hearing nothing but birdsong, a rushing waterfall and the bells of a couple of goats as they rush around the building.

Driving the D 1006 from France to Italy or v.v. you pass through wonderful scenery. Le lac de Mont Cenis is amazing. Looking at the border on the Col de Mont Cenis you can see a large building, almost like a barrack. The name le Malamot is written on it in huge letters, but one certainly would not guess that it contains a very good restaurant! Don 't miss out on an excellent meal, with super house wine and very friendly service just because the building does not look too inviting. We also like to stay the night as the rooms are simple but impeccably clean and the beds are good. It 's such a luxury only having to climb the stairs to your room after a €19,50) 4-course dinner. We have visited Le Malamot several times over the years now, bringing family and friends, and all of us loved it.

My previous review of this restaurant was written in 2011. Twelve years on and it is time for an update. This restaurant is still one of my favorites. The food is excellent. We all had trout as main course and it was as good as it gets. I believe the owner gets them from a nearby mountain lake. Fruit and vegetables are sourced from nearby Italy. Add a French cook and you get the best meal you can imagine. I saw an Italian 1-star review, mainly complaining about the price. Unbelievable. We almost feel embarrassed by the utterly friendly prices. Less than € 120 for four three course meals and some excelent wine. Highly recommended and worth a detour!

This is a restaurant I would never have visited, if it wasn't for the recommendation by local friends. The outside of the building is really as plain, almost uninviting, as you can get in that astonishing landscape at the foot of the Mont Cenis barrage. Inside you get pleasently surprised by a very friendly staff. And when the food starts arriving, you will understand why I never pass the occasion to eat here when I visit the region. A marriage from heaven: traditional French style cooking with the freshest Italian produce. Choose the excellent house wine and just stay the night in their hotel.
