After something of a gastronomic trip to South West France we thought we'd try and end the trip on a high with one last nice dinner. After dining at a number of Michelin restaurants, of course we weren't expecting the same fireworks, but equally...we expected a very solid offering worthy of a star, sadly our expectations couldn't have been any more misplaced. We made a last minute booking here as a number of other starred establishments nearby were fully booked; we should have taken the hint! What we were hoping for was some good quality, old fashioned cooking, what we got were a series of unremarkable dishes. The dining room itself deserves a mention as it has been modernised over the years...
It's hard to know where to begin except to say that this has been one of the most exceptional meals I have had in a long time and a true surprise during a long weekend where I expected traditional French country fare (though I know...I shouldn't have been surprised from a Michelin-starred chef . The setting (a lovely terrasse in the middle of the wood) is quaint and romantic. The wine selection is extensive. And the food is simply top, both complex and yet not overwhelming. I had the pigeon (a first for me but ordered upon recommendation of my husband) and it was outstanding. Le restaurant étoilé Michelin peut se targuer d'un haut niveau de service, comme on peut s'y attendre à ce niveau. Après avoir essayé le menu composé pour la saison, je dirais que certains éléments des assiettes servies étaient excellents, d'autres idées n'ont pas vraiment fonctionné. Le plat de viande de veau était bien cuit, mais les différents éléments de l'assiette ne fonctionnaient pas bien ensemble. Le plat de poisson au thon blanc sur un lit de légumes était très délicieux. Nous avons apprécié la soirée avec un personnel de grande qualité, veillant à ce que vous soyez à l'aise.
We ate here twice for dinner while staying at the hotel. The very young sommelier knew his stuff and gave some excellent recommendations. We found all the food to be truly of excellent quality. Michelin restaurants in England tend to be very stuffy and formal...so it was a joy to enjoy a meal with such relaxed and charming staff and guests. We enjoyed the inventive use of mushrooms in all courses (if you wished) the mushroom butter was fantastic. Service was attentive and highly efficient but somewhat imprrsonal. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and arranged but lacks ambiance. The food was excellent although I had to ask for another knife as I could not cut my lamb. My husband was delighted to have Happy...Birthday written on his desert. We were happy to spend the money on a special night out but it was not value for money. We will not be going again. There are other excellent resaurants in the area where the food is as good and you will thoroughly enjoy the evening.
We took friends to celebrate my birthday and had a lovely evening. The staff were friendly, very professional, but not intrusive. The knowledgeable Sommelier recommended some excellent champagne and wine which we really enjoyed. It's a lovely restaurant for a special occasion, not too stuffy....The only disappointment was that the fish that my wife and I had, Monkfish/Lott, was overcooked, tough and rubbery, but apart from that, the meal was superb. We will revisit with family when we can.
Nous avons dîné ici début août. Ma femme et moi avons eu le menu suggéré à trois plats avec les recommandations de vins et c'était excellent. Nos enfants ont choisi le plat principal et le dessert et ont également été très satisfaits. Mon fils pensait qu'il avait eu la meilleure entrecôte de tous les temps. Nous avons tous été très satisfaits de tout, mais sachez que certains membres du personnel ne parlent que français et font les présentations de la nourriture en français.
We have not had such a fantastic experience before. The hotel room was superb and our dinner was just the best. The staff are multi lingual and so efficient and the ambiance of the establishment made us feel very special thank you. We pay well...for excellence and those who provide the best deserve to be well paid. Don’t miss breakfast either it’s very relaxed and informal but lovely. Réservez une table maintenant
What can I say? We enjoyed the three course dinner, but were not as impressed as we had hoped. Some nice amuses were served. Wines proved satisfactory but unsurprisingly rather expensive. Service is formal, perhaps a bit stiff but that is a matter...of taste. Eating here was an interesting experience, but once was enough.
