One of the great things about Aix-les-bains, besides lake, mountains, and posh houses, is the fact that it’s only a few minutes from the Autobahn. On our way home from the Provence it happened to be lunchtime when we passed by, so we just drove into the city, parked the car, and entered the first decent-looking restaurant. L’Ecuelle is located in a modern grotto and offers regional food, for example the tartiflette, something like an undercooked gratin with Reblochon cheese. It has been around only for thirtysomething years but has already been promoted to a signature dish for the Savoy region. Always looking for something from the area I couldn’t resist, even if a dish heavy with cheese isn’t probably the wisest choice if you are traveling. Well, after burning my tongue a number of times I started to really like it, also the well-dressed salad they served with it, even though it got warm very quickly because it was put right next to the tartiflette. My wife went for the fresh and clean gambas which came with yummy risotto. She was equally happy with her choice. The service was fast and friendly and spoke decent English. Just one warning: If you eat a tartiflette make sure that afterwards you have enough water with you. We had hopped onto the toy train which takes an hour to go to the lake and back, and in the end I was almost dying of thirst.

Had a tenderloin steak here while having dinner with my colleagues (on a Monday, they opened at 7pm). Grimbergen beer is *thumbs up* Asked for medium steak, but it was more “done” than medium. Ambience on the street is good as it’s a pretty cooling weather. The male server is a cool and handsome guy.... the female server is a very cheerful and pleasant person to go to. Overall very good experience.

We had dinner here on our first night in Aix. The restaurant’s terrace was fully booked but they have many more tables outside on the square a little ways away so we sat there. Food was good and service was unbelievable given that we were about 30 metres away from the kitchen. Everything was piping hot and very tasty. We had hamburgers so I don‘t know about the rest of their menu.

We had lunch here but service was quite poor and food disappointing. The steak of the menu of the day was burned, hard and small, with 50% waste due to burned meat, the rest was nothing. The rest was mediocre and the waiters not very friendly. Not a place I would go back to.
