Sometimes in life, it seems as though you were just meant to do something or go somewhere. Overnighting in Vienne on our way to Provence we walked past this restaurant as the external appearance just didn 't appeal. We tried a couple of doors up the...street but were told they were fully booked. Another 15 minutes of walking and searching in a largely closed Old Town last Tuesday evening decided us to go back to L 'Estancot. Hobson 's choice we thought! Oh how we changed our mind upon entering. The warm welcome, the intimate atmosphere, the attentive but discrete service......and the quality of the food. Neither my wife nor I had ever tasted the local speciality Crique and so decided to choo...

Warm welcome and nice decor The starters were good although the rillette de truite was under seasoned The fish on the two main courses were cooked very well saumon and bar but the accompanying vegetables were a real let down. The carrot was only distinguishable...as a carrot because of its colour. It had NO flavour at all. The same could be said for the squeaky green beans, the over boiled artichoke and the microwave-reheated roast potato. Truly terrible and a real shame as the sauces and fish were both great. Following the main, the cheese plate consisted of 4 slices of cheese of varying strengths. I have bought nicer cheese in the Vienne market at the weekend. They were ok, but in a French...

This restaurant was recommended by friends and so lived up to our expectations. We chose a speciality of the region, a crique, which was totally new to us but highly recommended. There were lots of toppings and our choice with gambas and scallops was superb....Very fresh, wonderful and tasty. The atmophere was very friendly, and we even chose 2 deserts because 2 served to a friedly couple next to us looked so good. Whole experience superb and this is definitely the restaurant we will visit whenever we are near Vienne.

We had noticed this restaurant while wandering around the historic centre. We got the last available table, not having booked, on a Saturday evening as we arrived early. We sat outside. We had the 33 euro menu which included terrine de fois gras, pork and...duck dishes. There was a cheese course and for dessert, a delicious apricot crumble a dish which the French have recently taken to. Service was friendly and efficient.
