We decided to stop off at Salles as it was about half way between St Jean de Luz and Ile de Re......the hotel, whilst on a busy road had its own gates, car park, and large front garden, complete with a lovely secluded terraced area where one could take one' s meals. Our welcome was warm, and we booked into for both dinner and breakfast the next day.We had paid for a standard room, and our room No. 5 was enormous....three ceiling to floor windows overlooking a a large, tired terraced area, and a big parkland garden. (I have subsequently learned that the lovely Dutch couple are gradually bringing this lovely house back to standard, but obviously bit by bit). W had two arm chairs, a fabulous marble fireplce, a huge truly comfortable bed, obviously TV, etc, our surprise was, walking through to the bathroom, we had an ante room, complete with sofa, table and lamp....then there was a separate loo, plus an enormous bathroom, with two basins, a freestanding bath, with a shower attachment.....ideal for a romantic bath for two...sadly not at our age!!! Everything you could possibly think of was provided, including a shaving kit!.There is a bar, which acts as the breakfast room in the morning, and the brasserie at lunch time, where there lunches cost around 13 euros, however, we were shown into the restaurant......and the menu was fantastic. My husband chose three courses from one of the set menus @ 24.50 Euros, and I was piggy and chose the fantastic prawn starter, followed by the equally incredible sea bream. Excellent choice of wines, and excellent service. My husband chose smoked salmon salad as a starter, and steak for his main course, plus a really fabulous pud which seemed to go on and on, served on a slate platter....trust me, the meal was excellent. We both slept like logs, breakfast was 9 euros, and for that, we each had our own basket of 'breads', rolls, croissants, pain aux chocolat and other pastries......we were given a yoghurt, and an apple was already on the table, plus all sorts of jams and other spreads. We kept being offered eggs, cheese, and/or ham.....but really we had more than enough on our table. Fruit juice of your choice, plus a hot drink (or iced water) was also brought to your table.....The lovely Dutch owners speak a veritable plethora of languages, were truly friendly, and couldn't do enough for us,.....I only wish we could have stayed longer. Hopefully we will be able to come back next year. Thank you Esther and Erik.

Have used this hotel twice for an overnight stop and, although the owners are, I believe, Dutch, there is what I have always regarded as a typically French division of resources between the restaurant and the hotel. On both occasions we have thoroughly enjoyed our meals in the restaurant; the portions are generous, the food is well cooked and presented, and the wine list provides a good choice. The restaurant is a nice place to be and, because it is popular with the locals, I can understand that money is spent on keeping it in top condition but I think more attention needs to be given to the bedrooms. It could be that bedrooms are being modernised on a rolling basis and we’ve been unlucky that both the rooms we’ve had have been – shall we say? – tired. They were properly serviced, clean linen etc, but the decoration is dull, the lighting is weak and plumbing is dated. The rooms are large with high ceilings and could be spectacular. It is an old grand property with extensive grounds and maintenance must be costly but, whilst I can recommend it for an overnight stop, I think improvements are needed before I would recommend it for an extended stay.
