Please ignore the reference to Mother Kelly’s as this place appears to have changed hands and is nowhere near M K’s standards. We always make a post Christmas trip down to Porchester Castle and have bought fish and chips here for many years. This year...however, we were very disappointed. Although my fish was good (mainly because they had to cook it specially) my daughters fish was over cooked, my sons battered sausage had little batter on it and all our chips were undercooked and raw in the middle. We’d have taken them back if we hadn’t already left to eat them elsewhere. I suggest that Mother Kelly removes her name from this place very soon or this kind of review might affect her business...
We were a little concerned when on entering the restaurant we saw plates of food left on tables, they seemed almost untouched but we hadn't been back for months due to the pandemic and we were expecting the fish and chips that we'd been...accustomed to over the last years, we were wrong. The excessive battered and overcooked fish had dropped in size by half and this seemed to be supplemented by an enormous portion of dry chips that had obviously been around for some time! decided to change from our usual chippy, travel a bit further and try this place so disappointed, the fish was to eat up to the point of dry and unpleasant after it broke through the dark brown dough. the chips were cold and we had the worst I've ever ordered. the customer service was a bit of “Shouty” though the pleasant things were exchanged when eating was handed over to me. the load was busy with many orders, so I doubt whether they would take care of bad reviews. will not return. Pity, we thought the name and the call would guarantee good food. unfortunately not.

I have been a patron of Mother Kelly's for many years, but I am extremely disappointed with it now. When Deep Blue first took over, they maintained the high quality, but that is no longer the case. I recently ordered the pensioner's cod and chips and what I received was unacceptable. It looked like a battered fish finger with very little fish inside. It was overcooked and when I scraped out the fish, there was barely any meat. It felt like a rip-off. I will not be returning to Mother Kelly's and will not waste my money there again.
Totally rude staff. I arrived minutes before closing time and was told they don't cook after (they close at The reason being the cook doesn't get home if he works til I was asked why I looked at them like...that' after I'd been spoken to rudely! I was stunned to be spoken to in an extremely like that. The staff at the tills are helpful, but the cook just wanted to go home! Food was appalling!! Overcooked chips! If the cook wants to get home early, he needs to go and work somewhere else! Don't go there
I accept that over the past months or so the quality has been hit and miss and some visits weren't as good as pre-pandemic but...today was the best we have had in a while and has been getting better each visit. The staff is...welcoming and always friendly. If you haven't been in a while, now is the time to make a return visit.
We have visited this restaurant multiple times, but every time the French fries have been terrible. It is overpriced and not worth recommending to anyone. The fries were left with pieces of skin on them and had a gritty texture. The restaurant was crowded with customers, so I ended up waiting outside.

Terrible service from the minute we walked in, mediocre food that has significantly declined in quality from previous years, impolite staff - will not be returning!
