Living in France, one of the few things one misses from the UK is a good Indian restaurant, so when on holiday in the Ile D 'Oleron we thought that a vegetarian Indian restaurant would make a nice change from all the (very lovely) seafood restaurants. Maha Prana is a pleasant villa style restaurant where it is nice to eat 'al fresco ' on a summer 's evening. But the food was disappointing we chose a set thali type menu with a choice of starters, main courses and puds. I guess the cooking was tailored to French tastes where Indian restaurants are few and far between and anyone who has enjoyed Indian vegetarian 'street food ' type cafes back in the UK may be sadly disappointed. On the whole the food was bland but there was one gem amongst the starters there was a clear tomato and coriander soup which was deliciously subtle. The desserts were Middle Eastern rather than Indian and not particularly pleasant. Later in the evening we were entertained by an elderly but seemingly genuine Indian dancer. A nice touch but not worth a detour. Limited wine selection is well priced.
