Our latest visit to Makimono in Pickering was a disappointment. Where do I begin? On arrival, the hostess asked us to wait while they found a table for us. There were plenty of empty tables as we were there on a Tuesday when it was not busy. Three servers wiped down a table, then proceeded to sit down at the table and chat for a while, then after a few minutes they got up again and put cutlery down, then chatted some more and finally came up to the front to tell us our table was ready. The number of guests and cars in the parking lot still shows that this place is a popular place to eat.Service: I found service to be below average. Not warm and welcoming, and not knowledgeable. You generally must flag them down for service, rather then them proactively coming to see you. I noticed that servers try to cram groups of customers together when there is clearly room to spread them out for a better experience. Servers also try to push the extras such as drinks. Went to this restaurant today with 2 Chinese friends. Have not been there since it was renovated. The decor was very nice. Our waitress never smiled once.We were not impressed with the food although the selection was very good. The sushi was very dry. The meat dishes were VERY hard so much so they were inedible. Told the waitress . She just took the dishes away without a word of apology. The noodles were soggy . The shrimp with the noodles were very cool. The Sashimi was OkThe buffet was $17.99 plus $2 for a cup of green tea. Water was free.The desert was the best part.It was not worth the drive.
Food selection and portions is pretty spot on. I heard other folks complaining about the amount of food they would get every time they order but I guess they weren't sure that you can order an item more than once. It could use a thorough cleaning. The tables and floors were kind of sticky. Prices you can't really complain seeing they have an all you can eat option which is cheaper than mandarin. I visited Makimono last week for lunch. The service was average, as it often is in sushi joints. I ordered Teriyaki Chicken from the menu; the sauce was quite good, but the meat was fatty and I found two bones in it. Overall the lunch would have been a great deal had the quality of the chicken been better.
