After visiting the bustling Sunday market at Vega de San Mateo, we stopped here for some lunch. We had paella and sancocho canario, only available on Sundays and festival days. Everything was 100% authentic. sancocho canario is salt fish with gofio, boiled potatoes and squash. I can't say I loved it, and there was loads of it, but what it was was traditional. The meat paella was great, but could have been warmer. We paid virtually nothing. There is music and dancing in Vega de San Mateo on Sunday afternoons, and as one hombre told me after we had a dance and a beer, it is the true Gran Canaria.
