My mum who has mental health and learning difficulties regularly visited mother hubbards in batley, she ranted and raved about how great it was to me. The staff are usually lovely and friendly and was very sweet on the occasion I visited last. Speaking to her today after her visit to mother hubbards today though, I was horrified to hear that she'd been treated badly, the lady behind the counter had been snarky to my mum and her carer and presented a bad attitude towards them, my mum struggles with her legs and usually sits at the small bench in the waiting area. there were no other customers in there so she sat on the waiting area bench and was shouted at for sitting. I ordered 2 fishcakes, and as they had none ready, they made 2 up and put them in to cook. They looked OK, but all you could taste was fat inside them. Having worked in catering and in a fishop many years ago cooking, I realised they had put them in fat/oil that was not hot enough, and so it then soaks up the oil/fat inside the fishcakes. Had they got the oil up to a hotter temperature, this would have sealed the fishcakes and there would have been no fatty taste in them. The owner either needs to train his fish fryer better or put someone in who knows how to cook properly. I won't be going there again, it was great at the opening but has now gone downhill fast
I always love coming here as all the food they do is gorgeous..But lately when we got home to eat the fish, the batter underneath the fish is just like soggy paper, it's vile so u go to turn it over and it strips all the batter off..I know it's probably the steam that's doing that because they are in a box, there must be another way of serving them without the batter being so soggy, maybe like stand the fish against the chips, I don't know what to suggest..But I will say 90% of the time the fish n chips are beautiful, they are just as I remember as a child when we used to get a chippy every Friday with Mum and Dad..Thanks x
We ordered fish bites and chips. Chips with curry sauce and onion rings. We got a huge portion of the fish bites and chips, the fish bites were good. The chips were just huge portions to throw in the bin. So hard and white. The restaurant was clean but not tidy. This was not the staffs fault, some customers are just so scruffy, leaving their food on the floor (grown up 20 somethings), chairs just left strewn wherever they left them, food squashed on the table. I despair with the attitude of people like this. I feel for the staff having to clean up after them.
It appears that the restaurant has declined in quality. It used to be good, but my recent visit was disappointing. The fish was cold and the batter was soggy, as if it had been sitting out for hours. The chips were also cold and unappetizing. I don't enjoy leaving negative reviews, but I won't be returning. I felt like I had to work three hours just to pay for this meal. The staff seemed uninterested and unengaged.
I called last evening ordered two regular haddock lightly battered a small portion of chips and regular chips the fish was meaty and tasty however I would have been better just getting one portion of chips has there was far too many for us to eat not greasy has some reviews have said chips well cooked all the staff very well mannered ps IT IS CASH ONLY HERE no cards will definitely come back
I make sure to visit Mother Hubbard's at least once a month. The fish and chips there are delicious - the fish is perfectly white, the batter is crispy, and there's plenty of salt and vinegar, as well as a few scraps. The staff is very polite and friendly. Going to this fish shop always brings back memories of my childhood and reminds me of what true fish and chips should taste like.
The quality of the restaurant has declined, as the fish was not served hot. What was most disappointing was that they only accept cash. It would be expected for a business of their size to accept other forms of payment, considering how many people do not carry cash. I had to find a local cash machine and return in order to pay for the meal, which ended up being disappointing.
