Oberland - Réserver une table

I wanted to love this restaurant given the reviews, but the experience just didn’t warrant an above-average review. The food was good, but the wait staff did not provide attentive service. On the positive side, the mountain view from the front terrace was lovely. The food was tasty; it wasn’t exceptional, but it was very good. I had the pork schnitzel in a mushroom cream sauce with noodles, and my husband had the veal in a similar mushroom cream sauce with rosti. We both started with the carrot ginger soup; that was also quite good and a nice portion. The trouble was, the wait staff seemed more concerned with turning over tables than actually providing service to the people already at the tables. After we were seated, it took about 15 minutes to get any service, and that was only after we flagged someone down. The food came very quickly, but then we lost the waitress to her frenzied table cleaning and preparation. We sat for another 25 minutes after we finished eating. Again, we had to get their attention. We were going to look at the dessert menu but threw in the towel. In terms of delicious food and great service, the Hotel Silberhorn Restaurant was so much better.

I’m conflicted writing this review. The food was exceptionally delicious but I felt neglected by my waitress. I had the carrot ginger soup with bread, it was spectacular. My chicken Caesar salad was possibly the best I’ve ever had and I have had a lot. And a glass of water as I had been hiking most of the day. The food came in an appropriate amount of time but then a disconnect. Having drunk my water quickly, I asked for a refill. The waitress said she would bring some. 15 minutes later I flagged down another waiter who got me a carafe in 30 seconds. I took my time eating then realized that I had to make a train shortly and asked for my bill from the waitress. Next I see her clearing tables for no waiting customers and she started taking an order from a family who had only been seat for a few minutes. But clearly she had no thought about my request. She seemed like a pleasant enough person but had difficulty focusing. All the other staff seemed efficient, pleasant and focused and as I said, the food was excellent.

We came into town hungry not sure where to go. It was early, I walked into the restaurant, and it was greeted by a lovely lady, who was so kind to take a reservation on the spot for later that night. We arrived a couple hours later were warmly greeted had a wonderful rösti with mousse for dessert. Behaviors observed by patrons- kindness goes a long way. The place has limited seating is quite clear about reservations online signs- being nasty to the staff is a reflection of you, not this lovely place. Asking for the bill is normal- not being rushed is normal, expectations set. Book enjoy a wonderful dinner.

Is there perhaps a world wide decline in food standards as costs increase? Or am I just not understanding Swiss food? The service was prompt and friendly but the meals were very ordinary. We enjoyed excellent food in this hotel restaurant. The menu is Swiss focussed. The Rosti was particularly excellent but all the food was exceptional. The waiting staff were attentive and friendly, particularly Mirka who made us feel at home. If you are in Lauterbrunnen, then I would fully recommend you stop here to eat.
