I have been a loyal customer of this place since it was just a bakery. A few days ago, I went in to order a large oxtail dinner, and unfortunately, the staff had an incredibly bad attitude, which was surprising to me. When I placed my order, the employee went to the back to prepare my plate, which I thought was normal. However, it only got worse. I requested gravy, but was informed that it was already on the rice. When I got home—just across the street—I found that the oxtail was tougher than diamond dust, the rice was as dry as a hot day in Jamaica, and the cabbage was raw like coleslaw. I have lived in Rochdale for over 30 years and have always bought cakes from this place when it was run by an older West Indian lady. I was there when they started selling food, and it was fantastic. However, in recent years, under the new ownership, the quality of the food has declined. The service is inconsistent on most days, but my biggest issue is that they used to serve amazing beef short ribs, which they no longer offer consistently. Sometimes you can get them, but when you call to ask, they seem annoyed by the question. I'm really disappointed.
Ob's food has always been exceptional. I've been visiting OB's since I was a child, long before they started serving food. I remember the twin ladies, though I can't recall their names; they would always greet me with a smile and knew my name whenever I walked in. The beef patty and coco bread are fantastic! I first tried them when I was under 10, and now, in my 50s, it’s still the first place I go whenever I return to NYC. It feels like real home-cooked food.
I had a wonderful experience during my first visit. However, on my second visit on Sunday, October 30th, I discovered that they charge an additional 75 cents for oxtail gravy when ordering peas and rice. I ended up paying about $8 for a medium serving of peas and rice with cabbage and gravy. When I asked to have my order remade without the cabbage, I was instructed to go back in line. To the owner of the restaurant, can you believe you charge extra for a little oxtail gravy? Seriously, 75 cents isn't going to impact your bottom line. This just shows how inconsiderate you are to your customers. Your behavior is disappointing, and I hope you reflect on how you're treating your supporters. On top of that, the food is not even good; it tastes like it’s not been prepared well at all.
There's a fantastic lady who works in the mornings at this restaurant. She is so pleasant and always radiates positivity. If you're feeling down when you arrive, her kind words and wisdom will definitely lift your spirits before you leave. Kudos to her for making such a difference!
