Located in the very centre of Schönengrund, Restaurant Ochsen offers traditional Appenzeller food at moderate prices. The plain wooden dining room boasts a relaxed and uncomplicated atmosphere, in which I enjoyed a delicious lunch. Thumbs up to the waitress Karin for the genuinely friendly service. As starter I had the lamb’s lettuce salad served with eggs and speck generous and tasty portion. As main course I chose a local specialty: ‘’Appenzeller Siedwurst’’ (boiled sausage), traditionally served with cheese spaetzle and roasted onions. It proved delicious. Prices remain at usual Swiss level. I will gladly come back.
Die beiden zusammengewachsenen Dörfer welche der Tüfenbach trennt und dieser kurioserweise auch noch die Kantonsgrenze bildet lassen den Besucher zweimal hinschauen. Schönengrund AR aber ist mit seinem Namen für diesen Talgrund treffender, denn sehr oft, bei dichter Bewölkung geniesst allein der Ort einige Sonnenstrahlen. Früher zu weisseren Winterzeiten führte noch ein Skilift aus dem Dorf auf den nahen Hochhamm. Wald SG auf St. Galler Kantonsgebiet gehört zur nächsten Gemeinde St. Peterzell.
