We first learned of Otto in a Metro Edmonton newspaper article highlighting Edmonton's summer patio spots. We arrived at 5 pm, opening time, on a Wednesday for a little well-earned date night. It was soon pleasantly half-full with happy patrons. Our server took care of us as well as others with a top-restaurant level of expertise and friendliness. Ed, the owner (and former Culina co-owner we learned) was there engaging with customers, and he came around to us briefly too, which I really enjoyed. Sometimes owners in the restaurant can make you feel a bit awkward – you might get a sense of ego or you sense favouritism among patrons. We had a group of 10 (ages 14years - 57 years) for dinner on a Thursday evening. Thankfully I called ahead for a reservation, they were very accommodating and fit us in. We tried a lot of everything and EVERYTHING was DELICIOUS! The Beet Salad, Potato Salad, Mac n Cheese (amazing), Fries, Coleslaw, Fish croquettes, Otto sausage, Bratwurst, Chicken Sausage, The Mexican sausage (has cilantro but I forget the name of it), my daughter is a vegetarian and they even had a vegetarian sausage for her. Eight of us went to Otto on Friday night as one of our group had wanted to try it. Though the overall size of the establishment isn't huge, it never felt crowded. There is a large variety of beer and wine to choose from, with staff making recommendations as needed. We sat at a long table, with room for at least 12 or maybe even 14. I had my back to the rest of the place, and when I got up to leave was surprised that there wasn't an empty seat in the place!We ordered a variety of beers and wine, and each ordered our own sausage. I came here with my mom, her fiance, and his friend before going to the Cirque show the other night. My mom's fiance knows the owner, and it's a place we've wanted to try for a while. I'm not a beer drinker, but if you are, you've come to the right place. The owner is super knowledgeable about the beers and was happy to provide samplers to our table. Everything about this restaurant hit a home run with the 4 of us. The owner is very engaging - even holding a customer's baby while the parents ate their dinner. The big garage door opens the restaurant right onto the street making it a very real part of the community with out having to worry about City's silly bylaws on patio boundaries! I for one hope that the City loosens their guidelines so the restaurants can spill into the sidewalks like European cafes do. (Hence the title) We sampled several types of their sausages. We were 3 hungry adults so a lovely quiet table. The rest of this tiny space was filled with happy lovely families , it was early! There's even a play area. The beers were all wonderful craft beers. The menu is all sausages so sharing is a must! We had 3 all so good. Big player with a beef brot made with Alberta beef and Silvan Lake Gouda, Turkish, & Hot dog! Fries and slaw. Not a crum was left. The front garage door was open to the street so it was sunny and probably our first real summer night. Can't wait to return, sausage menu changes often and different sides appear, the Mac and cheese looks wonderful.
My heart and belly are full after our visit here tonight! I used to work in the Norwood area and to see a trendy restaurant serving up delicious food is truly wonderful. It is a comfortable place where you feel welcome from the moment you enter the door. The owners are extremely lovely people. Going out with young children can be scary but we knew we were in the right place. We even had an offer to hold our babe so we could enjoy our meal. The sausage selection and sides were plentiful and tasted so good. Great drink menu as well. We certainly will be back!!
This is my neighbourhood restaurant and as its main entree is sausages that it would get boring. But not so, they often have new sausages as specials and the beef bratwurst is so good that it's hard to get tired of it. Their fries are excellent, crispy and they taste like potatoes. Their beer selection is mostly from local micro - brews. I love the fact that if you go with a group the food is served on a platter so you can try all the sausage selections.
Stopped in on a Saturday evening after the FC Edmonton match. Decor is comfort, noise level is low, no TV's! Owner was engaging and warm. Wait staff also made us very comfortable. Selection of draft craft beer is very good. Sausage was tasty and fresh. I will definitely be coming back.
