So I actually went here last September and forgot to write the review. But I can't imagine it's gotten better since then. The cafe was down the street from a hotel I was staying in. The only reason I went in there was because it was used in the movie I, robot. There was only 1 person working that I could see and it took her forever to take my drink order. The coffee was ok. When she finally decided to take my order I ordered the French toast with eggs (over easy) and bacon. The bacon was the only good thing about the whole meal. The eggs were barely cooked; the whites were mostly runny. The French toast was more egg than bread, which was also not cooked. It looked more seared than anything be...

I'm often in the general area to see live music and have seen the storefront for quite some time. This was the first time I actually went in to eat though. The menu options are fairly limited in the sense that one side is mainly breakfast fare and the other side is the lunch/dinner items. Everything was reasonably priced and the most expensive meal was about $11. I ended up paying $11 with a reasonable tip for the Reuben sandwich which came out piping hot and was a good sized portion. The person beside me had what looked like a standard breakfast meal (think bacon, eggs, toast) which was significantly less in price than my sandwich. The restaurant itself has been around for quite some time a...
I recently spent a week in Vancouver having moved to the Fraser Valley 25 years ago. The last time I was in the Ovaltine was in 1981 as I used to work for the Vancouver Police Department and always wanted to return for a meal. It was my home away from home where I had breakfast lunch and dinner working shift work. It was a very nostalgic return for me and the food was just as good as what I remembered. I had the all day breakfast which was only $5.99 and the service was fast and it was piping hot. I chatted with the current owner who was so friendly and even brought me out the old menu that I had ordered from 35 years ago as she now has a new menu. I know the average person wouldn't set foot...
Eggs benny was cold,French toast was soggy though the service was fine. It's a shame such an eclectic historic cafe has such poor management. I defiantly threw a curve ball by ordering the Cali Benny at a place that I should have stuck to hash brows eggs and toast!I found out from the server that they were training a new cook and it was the owner who cooked my food! Yikes! The owner was training a new cook how to squeeze cold hollandaise sauce out of a package. My 11 year old son wrote the first portion of this review. He basically summed it up yet I had to add the details. This place needs lighting. A chef and it's a gold mine in the middle of the new yuppified dtes. Réservez une table maintenant
Don't hesitate to stop in for a bite at the wonderful old Ovaltine. I know it's in the DTES but it's really worth a visit. Been there forever (well, since1943) and it serves up very tasty comfort food. Just the basics, mind, but if you're looking for great breakfast, a BLT, fish and chips (or similar), you can be sure to get it at the Ovaltine. Grace, the owner, is friendly and welcoming. If you're a snob and need linen tablecloths and valet parking, then go somewhere else and pay through the nose for your fancy cuisine. When you want down home comfort food like Mama used to make, and at a very reasonable price, head for the Ovaltine!
You have to go here even if it is just for coffee. Old time Vancouver favourite in an interesting dynamic neighbourhood. Hasn't changed decor in years. it is authentic and they have revived their service to respond to late night clubbers. Food very economical and fresh. Best breakfast value in town. Simple foods like grandma makes. Great after theatre or club experience.
I remember the Ovaltine Cafe and it's signature neon sign way back when I was knee high to a grasshopper. I believer that my father mentioned that the restaurant was owned by Bill Wong at the time. Meals were reasonably priced and flavorable. Alas, gone are the "good old days"
I enjoyed experiencing the nostalgic setting of The Ovaltine, but I was disappointed with their menu and the service wasn't that great. The server forgot to tell us that several items on the menu were no longer available ... not much choice for picky eaters. Réservez une table maintenant
