I miss 2nd Ave Deli and this is a good replacement. The staff is friendly. The food is excellent. We brought great grandma here a few times and celebrated her 100 birthday. The brisket, pastrami and corned beef were all delicious, similar to Katz. The tongue is very moist and flavorful but sometimes can be too salty. The chopped liver is superb, the best outside of 2nd Ave Deli. Matzo ball and soup is standard at our table. The rye bread is seedless! Would be a weekly visitor if I lived close by. We recently needed help with catering options and the order came out perfect. All the picky eaters were more than satisfied. I was nearby doing a little shopping and I thought maybe I'll get some soup and half a sandwich for dinner. I get inside to the counter and I'm not waiting long. I ordered a half pastrami with a cup of chicken soup (no noodles or rice). It came with fries and pickles. I added on a small cup of coleslaw and a can of Diet Cherry Dr. Brown's. The gentleman helping me was very helpful and accommodating to my requests. I got home and had some of the soup first. It was good, not too salty but it seemed like it was doctored with bullion. I ate a little of the fries, they were ok, wish they served hand cut. The sandwich was good, I only ate a couple bites with the bread and the rest I ate without it...
So here's the thing, they aren't clean, plain and simple. I only get soup here because it's the only thing they can't touch with their hands. Don't believe me? Go in and order anything other than soup, to go, and just watch. The guys at the counter wear rubber gloves that they wear while making your food, and continue wearing them while handling money. They don't change them. Sure I'd love a side order of filthy money in my sandwich. If the money you just touched was in a strippers g string all the better. Just ordered pastrami sandwich today. It looked like it was the left over shredded black pieces from the end. So sad. Having recently eaten at Woodro’s and Ben’s I was expecting halfway decent.
