I've been to a number of teaching restaurants, and prior to my lunch on Nov 6 @ PJ's in the Atrium always received erratic service and food that ranged from outstanding to nearly inedible. Noe 6th's lunch was a notable exception to that experience: the menu was refreshingly different and varied for all the tastes and tolerances at our table; orders were taken efficiently and delivered correctly; soup, mains, and dessert were served at appropriate temperatures with understated garnishes (yes!); and the price for 6 with drinks topped out at a whisker over $100. We decided to try PJ's after reading about it online. We booked for four, and enjoyed a 5-course, set meal. It was delicious - everything was well-plated, presented and explained. Service was attentive and of a very high quality. The 'Latin theme' pervaded every part of the meal, from the 'amuse-bouche', to the dessert trio. The soup and entree could have been hotter.The restaurant, run by U of G's Hospitality Department, features special dinners each Thursday in Semester II, with lunch as well on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. What a nice surprise - will definitely return.
Our group was very pleased with the entrees we ordered (Mac and bacon, veggie chili with cornbread). The mac and cheese was perfectly creamy and cheesy, the addition of bacon was a great touch, and the chili was packed full of flavor. For dessert, the chocolate cake was delicious and the raspberries added a perfect finishing touch. Our waitress, Sydney, was attentive, pleasant, and professional. Our one suggestion is that the water for tea could be hotter to allow it to steep properly.
An awesome place for an inexpensive meal! The rotating menus offer fresh, unique options every day they're open. The student staff is always friendly and approachable, quick to answer your questions, or check the back for the answer if they don't know. Everything I've had has been delicious, and I would highly recommend anyone near the Guelph campus to make a visit to PJ's.
