I have been to Portosole many times, usually I have had an exceptional experience except last night. I assumed that the big block of pecorino/reggiano cheese was available for any dish... I requested to have a bit of it shaved for my guest 's risotto... rather, he brought an order of the spaghetti mixed inside said cheese. Apparently, this is a dedicated block of cheese for a spaghetti dish. Admittedly, it was a misunderstanding and my/our own misperception. I was embarrassed, apologized to him profusely, to which the waiter 's answer was the chef was upset, he gave me a hard time ... The waiter was obviously upset at me... leaving myself and my guests confused. I did reach out to the manage...
Let me begin saying I actually like the food, service, and ambience at Portosole. The restaurant is spacious and elegant. The waiters are professional. The focaccia bread was delicious. Dover sole was excellent. Salad was just ok. What I do not like about Portosole are the prices and upcharges. They charge you heftily for water when you ask for tap water. They know better than that. The sole was a special that was rung up at $61 for lunch. A glass of an ordinary pinot grigio was $18. Lunch for 2 totaled an excessive $250 after they added a mandatory 18% service charge excessive without dessert. Because I don't appreciate the upcharge for water, excessive pricing, and included service charge...
However, the true highlight of the evening was the food. Every dish, from the risotto to the cheesecake, was a delight. The flavors were exquisite, and the presentation was flawless. The risotto, made right at our table, was particularly remarkable. Our neighbor at the next table recommended a Café Liquor, Brulot, which we tried as an after-dinner drink. It was fantastic, offering a robust coffee flavor without the excessive sweetness found in other coffee liqueurs. The restaurant also has a private room available on the second floor for larger gatherings. PortoSole is truly a gem in Coral Gables, and we can't wait to come back. I honestly love this restaurant, in the glitz and glam of awful Instagramable Miami hotspots, that underwhelm, Portosole remains a local spot that delivers the highest quality cuisine and service in a quiet atmosphere tucked away in Coral Gables.It's not just for locals only, but for people in the know that want to have the best in a classy professional setting. Highly recommended for a special business luncheon entertaining clients, a romantic dinner, or a family get together. 5 Big Stars to the chef and to the service which is always outstanding. We've visited this restaurant multiple times and generally had a positive experience. However, our visit last Saturday night was disappointing. We had a disagreement regarding their policy on bringing our own wine, the noise level in the restaurant was excessive, and it felt like the waiter was hastily pushing us through our meal. On the plus side, the food is quite good, but the overall atmosphere has deteriorated. We are uncertain if we will return.
I grew up in the Gables and always enjoy spending time in the city. Unfortunately, my first experience at Portsole was disappointing. Despite there being available tables, the host seemed too busy to accommodate a party of two, so we decided to go to a competitor instead. It’s really unfortunate that at 6:30 PM, with plenty of empty tables, they couldn’t seat us for dinner. Wishing you the best with your business.
