Thought we had landed a real coup. Having a fish and chop shop right on our doorstep on a trip to Whitby. Unfortunately not. Firstly, this is a cash only place we nearly fell down at that point until I remembered that we had some cash in the car. The staff were lovely and the shop was very clean. When I saw the fish coming out they looked greasy, but thought that might just drain off. Our fish was cooked from fresh, so hadn’t been standing around. The unanimous review of our whole family was that it was the worst fish and chips that we had in Whitby. Fish was greasy. Chips were soggy. A real shame, because we wanted to like the place.
This was the second time we’ve tried this place and I’m afraid there won’t be a third. Most of it ended in the bin and even what what we did eat was only because we were so hungry. The fish was “wet” and slimy and swimming in grease as were what passed for chips. They were more like French fries and scraps due them being cut so thinly. The peas were passable and the bread cake was nice. You’ll know you’ve eaten them for the rest of the night as the grease keeps on repeating on you. Very disappointing.
Ate from here twice during our recent Whitby stay. If you order a 'Large ' fish, make sure you 're hungry, it 's more like they 've caught Moby Dick and thrown it in the fryer! Really well cooked and a nice thick piece of fish. The chips were good, not too thick but a little on the soft side for my liking (everyone else like them though so maybe that 's just me). The scampi was also good, not soggy like I 've had before. My favourite was the black pudding, well worth it!
Sorry to say the worst chips ever it's like they've been cooked left and warmed or recooked, the chips were so hard they were inedible, which is such a shame that the cheapest part of the meal, old chips could be thrown away when left and a fresh batch made. Rather than making a bad rep losing custom and wasting people's money , this is not the first time but this chippy has been a family favourite for a while so went back no any more. staying nearby, went into Co op and asked 2 people working there where they would get their F&C from unanimous. The smell was glorious and cooked to order. very good value for money (best) and tastier than the posher ones around the main drag/harbour. make the effort and get from here. Get your order in, have a drink in the little pub over the road. note they close at 7.30pm.
