"The only nice thing about this place is the staff. Apart from the dessert the food was a huge disappointment. The first course was as sweet as an dessert. The main dish was over cooked fish with a tasteless flan and a risotto so over cooked that it would pass as porridge. The staff however was excellent and made us feel very welcome. If the chef would start to not over complicate the menue and respect the ingredients it would be a really nice place."

This is a typical example of a restaurant that makes a living out of serving over-decorated, bloated "local" dishes to ignorant, mature tourists, and succeeds in doing so - presumably because its target clientele (the loads of lower middle class ignorants who couldn't tell an over-cooked risotto from a bowl of porridge) will never obtain an inkling of what good food is about. A pity, given that the menu boasts local ingredients (and the Jura has these in abundance). Swap the chef for someone who has proper respect for the local trout, mushrooms, wine, and manage to treat them with the respect they deserve, and you'd probably... well, you'd probably scare off the pensioneers and flubby middle-aged couples who think this place is as close to heaven as it gets. The only thing this place deserves is a visit by Gordon Ramsey.

We were staying in the Deux Forts for a night on the way between Burgundy and Lyon so decided to eat in the hotel restaurant. We're glad we did. It is quirkily decorated, but the food and atmosphere was very nice, and the service friendly and helpful. We had a starter and main each from the carte, there was trout tartare, snails, little breaded fillets of perch (which I'd never tried before). My daughter had a nice entrecôte. Food was not super-posh, but not rustic either. Wine was good and excellent value, we had a glass of house vin jaune to start, then a blend of Pinot Noir/Poulsard/Trousseau from Domaine de la Pinte. Would recommend if you are in Salins (a characterful and interesting working town).Paul

This traditional restaurant is in the attractive Hotel Du FortIt has I fear passed its prime. It is described as “une cuisine contemporaine élaborée avec des produits frais” I dont think so-rather traditional and institutional with rustic rather than light touch The large room looks like it can cater for large coach parties -Not for intimate diningThe menu prices are reasonable, the service was good-only the food was lacking, Some advise carte rather than menuThe duck legs were dry. hard and long enough to win a turkey trotNot a dish to encourage repeat business and should not have been servedThe plateau du fromage was unspoiled by cookingIf you stay in the Hotel there must be better places to eat nearby

Wish there were more restaurants like this. Very tasty, inexpensive "menu du terroir" (Eur 24.90). Everything freshly cooked with locally sourced products and nicely presented. Girls serving were very efficient and friendly. These people are clearly professionals! In short, good food & unpretentious, relaxed atmosphere. Just the way we like it. I give it high praise and my recommendation to anyone who enjoys good food but has experienced disappointing restaurants elsewhere in France.
