Restaurant Maien

We met friends here for lunch. We were greeted by a very nice hostess and seated in the larger dining area with the fantastic view on this beautiful day. I had ordered the Feldsalat as a first course and the Barberie Ente as a main. The salad was excellent. Feldsalat was amazingly tender, finely chopped purple onions adding just the right note and a delicious vinaigrette rounded it out. Portion was a bit on the small side for €9 The duck arrived in a timely manner and there were enough people serving that the crowded dining room did not suffer unnecessary waits. The duck was just a bit on the dry side for my taste but still very enjoyable. Excellent mashed potatoes and a dark, full bodied sauce accompanied it on the plate. In an additional bowl was a portion of Rotkohl with roasted chestnuts. The Rotkohl was very bland and the chestnuts over cooked. I left that after a couple of bites. I prefer the real thing - sweet and sour with a nice acidic bite. By the time we were finished the dining room was less than half full and we were left with one server who clearly rather stand in the kitchen and chew the fat that take care of the diners needs. 20 minutes after we had finished still no staff in sight. One of us finally got up to remind her that there were people still in the dining room. We ordered espresso all around and after 15 minutes of watching this person stand and talk she served the coffee. It was tepid at best. I wanted to order a properly made replacement but after 10 minutes she was till a no show. We went to retrieve her again and after another 10 minutes finally got a piping hot espresso. The experience with this server really put a sour note on the experience.

Wir hatten einen schönen Zimmer mit Sicht auf Lörrach. Terrasse war groß genug für 2 Personen um nach Besuch an der Stadt oder nach einer Wanderung in der Umgebung herzlich zu ruhen und zu genießen. Betten waren ausgezeichnet, es gab eine gut gefüllte Minibar, Badezimmer o.k. Nein nichts zu klagen!Speisen im Restaurant sind nicht billig, aber dann bekommt man auch Qualität!! Frühstück kostet € 5,00 und für diesen Preis kann man nicht das gleiche erwarten wie in Hotels wo man € 15/25 zahlt. Ich habe viel gereist und deshalb ein bisschen Erfahrung. So Beurteilung Frühstück: sehr gut!Und auch wichtig: die Besitzer dieses Gasthauses sind sehr freundlich. Hier fühlt man sich wie zu Hause.Gibt es dann nichts negatives? Ja doch: wir müssen 660 Km. fahren um hier genießen zu können.

Nachdem wir den Westweg bis nach Lörrach runter gelaufen sind, kehrten wir schließlich hier zum gepflegten Dinner mit Übernachtung ein. Definitiv sehr gut. Kreative Küche, aufmerksame Kellner und ein schöner Ausblick runter auf Lörrach runden einen tollen Abend ab. Preislich am oberen Ende der Fahnenstange was sicherlich an der Nähe zu Basel liegt.

Dinner with friends a Friday evening and the place is almost full. Staff is friendly and helpful, they have also English menu's. The asparagus soup was great. The main salmon was very tasty, but my friend had the shrimps and said it was the best he had in a long time. The view will add a little extra magic.

Wir waren gestern zum Essen anläßlich einer Taufe, zum Mittagessen eingeladen.Das Essen Salat,Hauptspeise und Nachtisch mundeten ausgezeichnete. Sehr freundlich u.aufmerksame Bedienung. Gerne kommen wir auch privat wieder.
