I was dismayed to read KC's critical review of the Royal Marine, which is a traditional village pub whose landlord and landlady, Pat and Sue, could not be more welcoming and friendly. They also provide excellent food and beer at a reasonable price. The pub is small and intimate. The review gives a completely false impression. I was at the Royal Marine with my wife and disabled father in law at the same time as the reviewer and her party. It was sometime after they had arrived that I needed to go to the gents, which I could do only by clambering over their various baby equipment, which was blocking the route. This is a fantastic pub that stands out in a neighborhood filled with overpriced gastropubs. It has a lovely traditional charm and a warm atmosphere. You can enjoy classic pub dishes here, like the delicious pub duck, without any pretentiousness—what a relief! They offer two average ales (Speckled Hen and Greene King IPA), but there's also a very good Goff's Lancer available. Unfortunately, there isn't a local ale, and the presence of a Sharp's Brewery van in the parking lot was a bit unsettling, reminding me of the doom surrounding their Doom Bar. Overall, it’s a delightful place to unwind!
