Our first visit; no, actually I was in The Royal Oaks once before 55 years ago as a teen. Anyways... from the outside it's rundown, tired, and kind of scarey. On the inside it's also rundown, tired, and charming. Nothing has been updated or remodeled. It's got character like 1955 all over again but with 70 years of patina. The waitress/barmaid (Heather) was a sweetheart. Big smile, welcoming, friendly. Welcomed us, made suggestions, checked on us repeatedly and brought more ice cold beer without being asked a woman after my heart. The food was outstanding. I met a friend at this restaurant because I had heard that it had undergone a makeover a few years ago thanks to Bar Rescue. Although I don't think they kept many of the upgrades, the place is still lively and exciting. We had a great time with the owner until he fell asleep on a cot in the middle of the floor. The waitress was extremely friendly and attentive. She went above and beyond by staying late to keep the bar open for the remaining patrons. I would suggest arriving early if you want to avoid the drama, or late if you're looking for a wild experience.
I have found my new go-to spot! The wings are fantastic and the prices are affordable. The service is top-notch and the ambience of the historic building in Youngstown adds to the experience. We drove all the way from Pgh. to have lunch and they were closed up tight! Suppose to be open according to website and building was a mess, the lot was dangerous and the phone wasn't even set up for voicemail! DISGUSTING!!!
