We (my wife, our 20 year old son and I) stumbled upon the Strudelstube quite by accident reading from TripAdvisor;s top 20 restaurants in Maria Alm, Austria. I have not been to all of the restaurants so I cannot compare fairly, but my vote would be to place Strudelstube much nearer the top.First we learned that Maria Alm is much larger than the village area where our hotel is located. Thank heavens for the GPS which guided us to the right destination. Unfortunately, rain had started to fall so we had to eat indoors--our preference in Europe is always to enjoy al fresco dining which is so much more common here than at home in the U.S. (Greater Washington, DC for us). However, going indoors we enjoyed a pleasant surprise. The dominant theme is the fine polished wood which is common in this area. That motif alone is warm and welcoming. In addition, we were seated at a booth, our preferred seating as a family when possible (second only to eating outdoors). Our waitress was absolutely magnificent. First, she spoke fluent English, having spent time In New York and having plans to visit the U.S. again. Second, she went the extra mile to be helpful. She translated the entire menu for us with great patience and understanding. She also noted which dishes were truly common in Austria, which we appreciated, as we always prefer to experience the cuisine of the area we are visiting. Her descriptions were spot on.My traditional wienerschnitzel was tender and tasty and the potatoes and cranberries that accompanied it were the right complement for the main dish. My son and wife each had a different strudel dish in which the traditional thin pastry was filled with meat, vegetables or a combination of those, rather than the sweets and fruits generally known in the U.S. and they both pronounced those dishes enjoyable. The pièce de résistance, however, which distinguished this meal and made the evening so valuable was the waitress' candor about tipping. I had given her 100 euros and asked for 18 or 20 in return. However, she returned all of the change between the actual bill and the euros I had given her. I then followed her to provide the "trinkgeld" but she declined, This information was contrary to what I had read in guidebooks suggesting 10-15%.She explained that waitstaff are paid a living wage here and are not dependent on tips. I had read that tips were customarily included in the bill, but it still appeared that a 10% tip or so was the norm. I did insist on giving her 2 euros, if only for her extraordinary helpfulness. The night before we had gone to another local restaurant, one also recommended by TripAdvisor. There, too, we had a wonderful meal at a reasonable price. However, our waiter, who I believe may also be the owner, happily accepted the 15% tip which I provided him, but he also said nothing when I erred in my calculations and gave him more money with the result being a 30% tip. The error was mine and I am not faulting the waiter, but the contrast between his choice in response and our Strudelstube waitress' response was remarkable.Studelstube is a short drive (about 4 miles) from the village, if you are staying there, but you will be well rewarded if you take that short drive. Everything about the meal was flawless, from the different dishes we explored to coffee and dessert, and ultimately the service and helpful advice. Of course, having an Austrian waitress in Maria Alm who spoke fluent American English was the ultimate treat. My family and I love to travel and we can get along in French and Spanish, but my German is pretty modest. I am much more comfortable when I meet someone abroad who is comfortable speaking English, at least when I am in a land where I really cannot communicate in the local language. I do not expect every Austrian or German to speak English, of course, but I am extraordinarily grateful when I encounter someone who is able and willing to translate in detail so as to assure that we understand what we are ordering. In short, run, don't walk to the Strudelstube at least one time during your visit to Maria Alm--you might find yourself returning a few times with sheer delight.
