After hearing rave reviews about this spot as one of the best sushi places in the Hudson Valley, I decided to give it a try, despite my skepticism about fine sushi in this area, having lived here for many years. What I experienced was nothing short of disappointing. I was willing to overlook the strip mall location and lackluster ambiance – after all, sometimes great food can be found in less-than-ideal settings. When we arrived, we saw Chef Makio and a young student behind the sushi bar, looking serious and dedicated to their craft, which gave me hope for a good meal.

I never thought much about Momiji, but after dining at Sushi Makio, it felt like a fantastic choice by comparison. The chirashi was the worst I’ve ever encountered, with slimy fish and overcooked rice. The rolls were ridiculously expensive, squishy, tasteless, and fell apart as soon as I tried to pick them up. We sat at the sushi bar and struck up a conversation with the man next to us. When he offered to treat us to a round of toro at the end of our meal, we almost declined—not out of modesty, but because we didn’t want to endure more nearly inedible toro (we had already suffered through a disappointing serving without enjoyment). My husband and I were feeling hungry, and he suggested we stop for sushi. I wasn't very enthusiastic about the idea at first, but I figured sometimes we have to try things we’re not keen on. Once we went inside and sat down, we ordered our food, which arrived quickly and turned out to be surprisingly delicious. The staff was friendly and efficient, which added to the overall experience. However, the atmosphere could use some improvement. First impressions matter, and I think they should enhance the ambiance a bit. That said, the food was truly excellent.

It was fine, but a California roll here costs $10. I thought maybe it would be made with real crab for that money, but nope. Not only is everything more expensive here, it's also smaller...? Stick with Yasuda Kyoto
The food is fantastic and the service is outstanding. This place offers some of the best sushi in the Hudson Valley, and it’s consistently excellent.
