Tellers An American Chophouse

Since I 've been successfully cooking steaks for the last 60 years I 've never understood the current popularity of breathtakingly expensive steak houses on Long Island. But, since I have friends who have fallen for the steak house mystique, I 've been to many of them including Rothman 's, Rare 650, Peter Luger, Blackstone and, most recently, Tellers in Islip. They all feature good service and good food but Tellers is the only one which, in my opinion, comes close to being worth what a meal there will cost. To begin with Tellers is spectacularly beautiful with high ceilings, comfortable chairs, immaculate white table cloths and truly professional service. Free parking is plentiful and, thanks in large part to the high ceilings, the noise level in the dining room, unlike most popular restaurants on LI, is manageable. When I first went there a little over a year ago I was taken aback by the fact they charged for the bread and butter which every other restaurant I 've been to provides free of charge and wrote them a letter expressing my objection. The owner kindly took the time to respond to my letter, explained they had been spending a lot of money on bread they ended up throwing away and enclosed a $100 gift certificate to encourage me to give them a second look. Not one to waste a gift certificate I returned a couple of months later with my wife and a friend and had a wonderful meal including a bread service for our table which was well worth the $5 charged for it. With another birthday to celebrate I returned there with my wife and the same friend a few nights ago and had another wonderful meal. When I made our reservation on line I had included a request for a cup cake with a small candle to mark the birthday of my friend who is well into his 60 's. Given his age and my request for a simple cup cake with candle I was stunned when Tellers went above and beyond by comping the cost of his dessert (Creme Brulee), serving it with a candle and an edible topping which spelled out 'Happy Birthday ' and including a gift certificate for, I think, $35 to encourage him to return. In conclusion, if you have several hundred dollars burning a hole in your pocket and feel you have to go to a steakhouse I think Tellers stands head and shoulders above the others and strongly recommend you give them a try. Alternatively you could learn how to cook and produce a special dinner at home but, by the time you 've purchased all of the ingredients, lined up the utensils you plan to use, actually cooked the meal you 've planned and then cleaned up after said meal I think a few hundred dollars spent on a special meal at Tellers will look like a very attractive alternative. If you give them a try I think you 'll be glad you did.

It was good, but it wasn't THAT good. It was crazy expensive. You even had to pay extra for the bread. I went to a 2 star Michelin restaurant in NY and paid less. Tables were very crowded together. Service was slow getting started. I won't be going back. Food: 3 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 3

No Better Place I Could've thought of to Celebrate Something!!! Never Dissapoints, and our Waiter, Willy, was Awesome as well!! Service: Dine in Meal type: Dinner Price per person: $100+ Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Recommended dishes: Beef Wellington
