A group of 15 walkers went to the Axe Compasses for a mid-week lunch. Everybody enjoyed their lunch and the cozy wood burner, which made for a rewarding finish to our walk. The interior of the pub is rustic and charming, the service was excellent, and I heard several positive comments about the quality of the food and the choice of beers. The two-course lunchtime menu is very reasonably priced. In addition, most dishes on the a la carte menu include the choice of a smaller portion. The pub is tucked away in the historic heart of the lovely village of Braughing, opposite the Church Green, yet close to the A10 and the A120.

We had a meal as a family earlier this month and it was extremely disappointing. The service was very, very slow. The food was mediocre and in my opinion overpriced. We paid £8 for cheesecake and it was the smallest slice of cheesecake I have ever seen! Absolute rip-off in terms of value. I’m guessing the vegetables were intended to be al dente, but there is a difference between al dente and raw! All in all I would not go back as the food is too overpriced for what is offered and the service is too slow. The menu is also very limited. Disappointing I’m afraid.

Had a great Saturday lunch at just £9.99 for two courses and the food was absolutely delicious. The place is charming and quaint and the young man serving was friendly and welcoming whilst being knowledgeable about the food and drink menu.
