I have been a patron of Backstreet since my folks and I moved to Riverside in 1977. Throughout the years the food and service has been consistently excellent. That was until I came in with my sister and niece two weeks ago. To begin, we get in line, along with other customers, and not one employee saying Welcome . The previous owners/employees were exceptionally friendly, well not now. As we reach the counter, the menu list has changed, is very plain and prices have gone up while food quality has declined. I ordered from the hot menu (roast beef), but my sandwich was served cold. After I mentioned this, they offered me the other half, which I accepted and pointed out that the half I received was cold. The second half was warm, so it left me wondering why I wasn’t given the hot sandwich that I ordered in the first place. We both ordered potato salad, but I noticed that my friend’s portion was bigger than mine. Overall, my first experience was disappointing. Great little quaint sandwich shop with welcoming staff! They are quick with the orders and are happy to answer any questions you may have. I ordered a Reuben sandwich on rye with a side of potato salad and I thought it was very tasty! I will say that the pies were not quite what I was expecting. However, the atmosphere in the outdoor seating area that they offer more than makes up for it! Plenty of shade, lots of seats, not too cramped, and tons of quirky, interesting decorations. Will absolutely come back again!
