I met a friend here on my first trip to winchester. I found the name of the pub in a lonely planet guide and decided why not as it was quite centrally located in our hotel. my wife and I came to our surprise. the place was full of tensions. in what seemed more like a circus page exhibition exhibition exhibition than a pub, a large selection of real ales were on tape prominant. the bar was friendly enough, and a little sarcastic if they want to give him a quip. we chose to sit outside and smoke our pipes and there was no less entertainment inside. each round leads us back to the bar and a short chat with david. we have mentioned that there is a lot of black this or that around this particular...

in truth, I killed time waiting for a bus (there is only so much time that they can pour in the guildhall and cathedrale in their purple spots, is not because I was underwhelmed elsewhere, but was thrilled by this pub. I was in some quirky pubs in my time, but this is the most quirkies by far. from the menagerie of the stuffed animals to the imaginative tables and the collections of the left behind objects arranged in groups, they spend most of the time just looking around....We have changed the sitting times as we have found other areas better than the previous ones! the service was also quirky. I was offered a very nice one with the explanation that it is a strange gin. it wasn't, it was just not gordons, but it was very nice. a really funny place to get some time away.

Nothing prepares you for the wonderful interior of the Black Boy. Can't even begin to describe it so you'll just have to visit to see for yourself, but it is unlike anything you've seen before (let's just say doors on the ceiling, a giraffe, big...metal safes, a stuffed sealion.... Good choice of mainstream and local brewery beers, friendly staff and comfortable seating. What's not to like?

I love this pub and it's quirkiness, we've been for years, but why did it stop eating? I once loved a suppe and sandwich too. Come on!
