Four of us dined at The Exchequer today, August 8th, 2023, and we were quite disappointed. Two of us ordered the risotto, which was very salty and nearly inedible for those who don't consume salt. The fish and chips were acceptable, as was the Thai curry. However, the desserts were a major letdown. The chocolate mousse with salted caramel ice cream was essentially just a bowl of ice cream topped with a thin strand of chocolatey sauce from a plastic bottle. If there was any banoffee sauce, it was nearly impossible to detect. There were only a few crumbs of honeycomb and a tiny sprinkle of raspberry, all priced at a steep £9.50. Sunday lunch in March 2023. You may wonder why I am writing this review so long after the event? The simple truth is we all lead busy lives and finding the time is often difficult. I am currently on holiday and just had a nice lunch here in Fuerterventura but it was not a patch on the family lunch we had back in March at the Exchequer but at least it reminded me to do this review! First stop of the Crookham Mummers on boxing day. These characters bring hundreds of watchers(and punters) to all establishments they visit boosting their takings. They do it for charity. Philis Tuckwell hospice. Very worth while. So if you have to wait for your drinks while the mummers get theirs please be patient. One day you may need a hospice! I had the duck liver parfait which was really nice but there was only one thin slice of toasted white bread it would be better with a nice artisan bread. The main course I had brick lane grilled tiger prawn curry which had a lovely flavour but unfortunately only had one grilled prawn on top and I couldn't find any more inside. Great place to stop for dinner on the way home from a long drive. Beats a service station and wasn't far off the motorway! Staff were lovely and the food was very tasty. Sitting outside in the sun was very relaxing as well. Very quiet area! Bit on the expensive side but it was definitely quality over quantity. They also has Guinness 0.0 for those wanting a beer but have lots of driving ahead!
The food was enjoyable, especially the pies, which were delicious, although they were served with a rather unusual gravy. The prices were reasonable. Overall, the service was decent, but we experienced a few instances where we had to wait for a while. On one occasion, we needed more drinks but had to wait for some time before anyone came to attend to us.
Charming pub/restaurant with a very welcoming staff. They offer a great variety of drinks and the food is delicious. The fish and chips were outstanding! It's absolutely worth visiting—I'll be going back for sure! So much more to sample! Réservez une table maintenant
