Seeing the number of positive reviews, my partner and I were excited about our visit to The Golder Elephant. Sadly the experience left us a little underwhelmed. Lovely setting, very welcoming and super friendly on arrival and have to say throughout. However, we were there...for the food which although we ate it all without any problem (mainly because the portion sizes were very small) the flavours were average. Tom Yum soup was bland, prawns were very fresh and plump but no lemon grass, galangal, tomatoes or kafir lime leaves, which is standard for a traditional Thai Tom Yum Soup. I have eaten here several times and initially really liked it. Yes the portion sizes were small but the food was delicious. However we went there a week ago as a group of and now the portions aren't just small, they are insulting. This...seems to have happened over a period of months. Rice and noodles are circa a bowl and the size is miniscule. They are served in a small bowl that isn't even full. There is no excuse for serving dishes of this size (unless you have Michelin stars). Knowing the portion sizes are small we over ordered but still had to order more. The duck was plentiful however the main dishes we ordered were also tiny. This is our local Thai restaurant and it consistently produces first class food and first class service. The mixed hors d'oeurve, and the crispy duck are our favourites as starters, with sizzling lamb or chicken, and their various thai currles as mains the food...is always piping hot, super tasty and served as generous portions. Recently, however, my wife opted for the Sea Bass and it was quite simply exquisite! Probably the best cooked that either of us had had anywhere in the world for over a decade! We love this restaurant! The service is great and the food is fantastic probably the nicest tofu dish we've ever had (the yellow bean tofu). It was perfectly cooked and had a great sauce.
