I’ve been to The Old Red Lion countless times throughout my life, and it used to be incredible! However over the years, it’s gone massively downhill! But leaving a review tonight, purely because I feel so sorry for the Manager what we witnessed tonight. Arrived at 6:30, for my Nannas birthday, party of 5. There were only a few tables taken at this point. We ordered our food within 10 mins of arriving. Tapas dishes for starters (6 small dishes), then a main each. After we ordered, we noticed the place really fill up. There was 1 person serving behind the bar and a queue out the door. No table service, no option to order on an app, so has to be at the bar, but only 1 person to serve drinks take food orders! We waited waited for our starters….They eventually came at 7:30…50 mins after we ordered, for 6 small tapas dishes. There was a young lad waiter, who was also the only one there, trying to serve food to a busy pub! We then waited waited for our main courses. Steak, Fish Chips, Steak Ale Pie, a Ckn Dish a veggie burger. The table next to us, had their food brought to their table. Once they had finished, the waiter brought the sides out which has obviously been forgotten about. The customers said it was far too late as they’d finished. So food was taken back to the table. 8PM still waiting. Went to the bar to order drinks could tell the guy was stressed. He explained he was on his own, with 1 waiter, and 1 chef! The assistant manager who was currently in a sling/cast, was in the kitchen trying to help the chef, with 1 arm!! Once you lose control of orders for the night, it’s really tough to get it back. He was extremely apologetic chased up our orders. They finally came 1hour40mins after ordering. 40 mins after finishing our starters. Me my dad, having both worked in pubs restaurants all of our lives actually offered to jump in help to get the bar the orders cleared. Obviously they couldn’t get accept the help but the stress on his face bless him! The food was okay. The steak fish dishes were apparently great, but the chicken was overcooked/dry. But by this point, it’s 8:15/8:20 it was too late for me to eat a full meal so I wasn’t too fussed. I went to the bar to get the birthday cake for my Nanna. We ended up taking this home because we didn’t want to add any more stress. Anyway, I got talking to Mark your new manager of 3 weeks I believe….He was put in a terrible situation tonight, and should never have been left with 3 staff members to run a busy pub/restaurant. This wasn’t for his lack of trying, he’s been to the owners (King Henry’s Taverns) and asked for more hours he isn’t getting this. I’ve seen this pub go massively downhill over recent years…. it all made sense. 19 managers have been gone in that pub in recent years, and it’s no wonder considering the lack of support and assistance they’re being given from owners. When you work in pubs restaurants you know how busy these places get, and you thrive on the buzzing atmosphere. But when your manager isn’t able to organise their own staffing, and put changes that are clearly needed into place, it’s him being thrown under the bus, being moaned at by pretty much every customer and losing money, purely because they’re snowed under and obviously aren’t trusted by brewery owners to do the job that he is clearly capable of doing. You guys are about to lose yet another great manager. You aren’t there seeing how busy this pub is day in day out. You clearly don’t know the peak times, or have trust in your management team to plan put things in place. The Old Red Lion used to be a cracking pub, but something has got to change. They’re snowed under with not even a handful of staff… You’re going to lose brilliant team members purely because it’s not worth the stress upset when these situations are clearly avoidable, but the managers are not being allowed to manage. If it continues to be run like a circus, you’re not only going to lose valued members of staff, you’re going to lose many loyal customers that have been going through those doors for decades. Mark Your service was impeccable tonight, under really tough circumstances that were clearly beyond your control are being dictated by the owners of the brewery/business. You are an incredible manager and your years in the hospitality industry clearly shows this. I’d be happy to be a staff member in a pub/restaurant run by you! The waiter was lovely too bless him but again, clearly stressed neither of you deserved the complaints you received tonight as you done everything you could with the tools you were given. The 2 stars are purely for the both of you for still doing everything you could to make sure your customers were satisfied. But if I was rating the owners, it would be 0*.
Good choice of lunchtime specials Mon Friday with around 10 choices at £6.49 each. The portions were adequate for lunchtime and priced fairly. We had the steak and fish. Full menu is available if required, normal pub prices and fare. Prompt service, pub was reasonably busy for a midweek lunchtime with 14 covers, which confirms my earlier comments. Would definitely come again.
