Who knew such a lovely little proper pub existed so close to Shoreditch? Well, quite a few people, evidently, as it was pretty busy in The Owl and the Pussycat and it was only a Wednesday. I heard about this place through Secret London and popped it on the List. I was going to Deviation at Concrete which is just around the corner so thought this would be an ideal place for a couple of drinks first This place goes in for big communal tables that you have to try to nab a place at, ending up potentially sharing with another group or two. the whole team had booked for our Christmas dinner before one because it is our native to say only on the day (today) that they had a booking for a much bigger party and they would not be served as a result. on the priciple that is brought from restaurant itself to lunch is really bad and while I understand that they are a business and they have to earn money that owl have chosen the pussycat team, not to honor a preordered booking, why would we ever book again? fortunately, there are many options locally so hopefully we find something for a party of 9?

no bad local alcohol, even if it was taken over by geronimo inns. they have fixed at the top, so it is more convenient. it even has a decent cocktail offer. our favorite back garden is still there, which is great in the summer when they can withstand the intensity of smoke gases. a mixed amount of local retailers and office types often get the space, they get early to take a place. Bar food is not the best, was usually cold and felt like it was cooked from frozen, but a good choice of beer on hahn and wee makes for it.

Another friend chose the chicken roast and couldn’t be disappointed – it was so big! It was like half a chicken served with carrots and duck fat roast potatoes. The perfect meal for someone very hungry. She actually couldn’t finish it… but did enjoy it. The only little disappointment being she thought she would get a Yorkshire pudding too. But generous friends like us obviously shared those huge Yorkshire puddings served with lamb roast.

If you are going to do one thing make sure you do it well, and Flat Iron have certainly achieved that. A lot places are running simplified menus, and Flat iron certainly takes this to the extreme, serving up just steak, and only flat iron (a cut from the shoulder) at that.

a typical bar with its beer on hahn. I think to really add value to these reviews, I must begin to track the names of the beer and try 3-4 different. in any case, busy space with not too much seat. we found ourselves here because dishoom had a long snake outside.

Really lovely atmosphere, exceptionally friendly, accommodating staff. Starters are gigantic and tasty, and although the main course involved a slight wait, it was absolutely delicious. Well worth many more visits.

The flavour was deep and rich with a slightly salty charred edge. The steak was just as tender as a fillet and barely needed the meat cleaver provided.
