During our road trip along the coast from Melbourne to Sydney, we took a break in Bateman’s Bay, a renowned oyster-farming area. We found The Oyster Shed, a quaint little shack located right by the Clyde River, where you can buy freshly harvested oysters by the bag or by the dozen. For just a few extra dollars, you can have them shucked and enjoy them on the deck, overlooking the pier. It’s truly an ideal setting for savoring oysters. The Oyster Shed offers both rock and Pacific oysters. The rock oysters are smaller and packed with flavor, while the Pacific oysters come in various sizes—standard, supreme, jumbo, and even super jumbo (you have to see these to believe them!). This review is more about the location since, unfortunately, Wray's Oyster Shed was closed during our visit due to recent bad weather affecting oyster harvesting. However, I will say that this unassuming shed by the banks of the Clyde might be the closest thing you'll find in the region to the Cajun seafood shacks commonly seen in southern U.S. fishing communities. While they focus solely on oysters here, they serve them for just a dollar each, and you can enjoy them right by the river. Wray's has shucked so many oysters that they've created a beach of shells along the river, and they've even repurposed them to fill in potholes on the dirt road that leads to the shed. I give them high marks...

I recently visited Wray Street Oyster Shed and tried their fresh oysters. It's a bit of a trek to get to, but once you keep walking along Wray Street, you won't be disappointed. I ordered a dozen large oysters for just $20. They were incredibly fresh and had a distinct ocean flavor, accompanied by a bit of a bitter aftertaste. This was different from other fresh oysters I've had, which typically don't have that aftertaste. They're definitely an acquired taste. I didn't find any sand or grit in them, which was a plus. While they aren't quite my personal preference, I wouldn't let that discourage you—these oysters are undoubtedly fresh!

Amazing oysters, we had half dozen Sydney rock medium size and half dozen pacific large. We also got the mandarin mint dressing and lemon tahini dressing to go with it. Highly recommend stopping by this oyster shed as part of your south coast tour or oyster trail.

Highly recommend fresh large pacific oysters. We also bought wasabi sauce, but the taste of oyster itself is perfect already.
