"A lovely old traditional pub with pleasant, friendly staff, an excellent jukebox, which is a rarity these days and an impressive selection of cask ales, including an unfined pale, Equuleus from Hop Kettle."

As of February 2023, after annually visiting Derby for the past decade and exploring all its cask ale pubs, I can confidently declare that The Smithfield is now the top cask ale pub in town. With a rotating selection of around 10 taps of cask ales, the variety is unmatched. The interior may not be the trendiest, but there is ample seating and a charming covered beer garden overlooking the river in the back. The staff is friendly, and there is a great community atmosphere. This pub is a must-visit spot in Derby, slightly off the beaten path but well worth it, especially when combined with a visit to the nearby Exeter Arms. Overall, an exceptional pub experience.

We love this pub, great atmosphere, beers are spot on, good friendly staff, however what we don’t like is other customers dogs. Why oh why if people insist on bringing dogs to a pub, they think it’s ok to let them run loose and be sniffing around other peoples ankles. They should be kept on a lead and not be allowed to seat on seats either. I would have rated 5 if not for the dog issue.

Winner of Camra Derby Pub of the Year over the last five years, this should be on any cask ale drinker's checklist of Derby pubs. The friendly female member of staff presented me with an unfined cask ale which I enjoyed while we soaked up the sunshine and listened to the birdsong in the beer garden overlooking the River Derwent.

I have reviewed this establishment before however have visited since and wanted to drop another review based on that visit. The Smithfield was buzzing on Saturday night with a cracking atmosphere and a decent selection on flat ciders. Had a good trip overall, in fact better than before. Thanks for a good couple of pints.
