Bistros seem to be popping up in cities everywhere. The traditional definition of a bistro is rather blurred these days - “a small restaurant, serving moderately priced simple meals in a modest setting.” Stable House is small however not simple nor modest (a little pricy for a "bistro"). I ordered the pork belly with celeriac salad that was simply divine. The meat was crisp and flavourful and the celeriac salad with shaved green apple was tart, perfect a companion to the pork. My brother had the beef carpaccio which was excellent as well. A minor comment, the portion size could be larger and the wine prices steep. Sometime ago we were drive touring through Sonoma and Napa and stopping at small bistros along the way enjoying unheard of wines and delicious food platters... Sipping through a series of wine flats and eating delicious bread and cheeses in a subdued but casually trendy location is why Stable House reminded me of our trip. We had flat breads, buratta, haaloumi and chuck steak and it was all well presented, delicious and well priced. The wine selection was wonderful and atypical for such a small place. One highlight, service staff super pleasant and helpful. My wife and I had the Gnocchi - had it not been we were in the company of friends they would have had it back! Also we were going to the theatre so no point in spoiling the evening. The dish was none to hot, greasy and rubbery. A "foam" was on top which turned out to be quite pretentious. The sauce seemed alien to the Gnocchi, not a large potion and although hungry did not finish.The wine prices, proudly advertised at $65 for an average wine by our server, plus tax and service was something of a shock, this is a bistro after all.One time and one time only for this restaurant, Vancouver can do better around the Stanley Theatre and this...
Walking on South Granville on the way to the Stanley Theatre a few weeks ago we spotted the sign for the Stable House Bistro, tucked away just off the main street, on 13th Avenue. Although it has been there for about 3 years we'd managed to miss it. We decided to go inside and check out their menu. We liked what we saw. Even more, we loved what we ate. Their menu is creative and reasonably priced with dishes grouped according to portion size. Lauren, our server, was friendly and unobtrusively attentive. She also knew her wines. Although the restaurant was busy, we could actually hear each other speak. We returned a couple of weeks later -- our experience was just as good. We will be back soo... Réservez une table maintenant
We were asked to leave our table (which was 2 hours later) after not ordering food within the first 15 minutes, which felt unnecessary and rude. I wish I could love this restaurant since I live nearby, but I am always disappointed with the service whenever I go. It's truly a shame.
