We visited here for lunch as we are in the area. As a chef and restaurant manager, we usually find the good in most dining situations and are pleased to be enjoying food somewhere else, however my experience was less than favourable from the moment...we arrived, an older lady grunted at us as we arrived the bar and wondered off, another lovely lady came to take our order for drinks but we hadn’t even been given menus, I got the distinct impression that the older lady had instantly dismissed us for not being regulars. I must stress here that all the other staff were lovely. We were promptly seated after ordering and given plenty of time to enjoy. The food we felt was distinctly average. We as...

the lunch for us turned out to press a little table. a call to the restaurant by another parade who reduced party size was accepted as our table. Despite our assurances, we had not made such a call, a big...without table was not available, although there was an empty table next to us for the whole meal. no apology was offered. our bill came to a head that, given the squeeze and very limited selection of vegetarian options, did not seem great worth for money. that said eating was delicious and the waiting service was excellent.

how refreshing to find somewhere that lives up to the hype. I took my man here to surprise and when it was worth the mile trip. we have both set ourselves from the menu that I think is a good option on. a first visit. we will definitely try the a la carte menu again. I was concerned portioning could be tiny and my man could still starve, but we could easily split a pudding and still satisfied. service was good, nice selection of wein at the glass everything in a beautiful experience.

What a pleasure to return after years and find the same superb food, brilliant service and unspoiled dining-room. I cannot praise highly enough the food: we had the set lunch which was for courses, simply and carefully served. Amuse bouche first, utterly...delicious and then mackerel, followed by skate then bread butter pudding and chocolate mousse. I am dying to return if you're attending the Hay-on-Wye Festival book in advance. it's always full and deservedly so.

Such a fantastic evening for my husband's birthday...he has always wanted to eat here and it did not disappoint. Very friendly, hospitable staff...nothing was too much trouble. My daughter has dietary requirements and this was catered for perfectly. Food was fantastic, everything we hoped for...and more. It is definitely the place for that extra special venue for celebrating an important occasion.

shaun hill is often said to be the chef chef and they see why when they are at his place dine. the menu is quite simple, but it is full of taste and surprise. I had the asparagus star and was thrilled with the result....The wee are so expensive that even the house was white of a quality / price I had never tasted. the service is immaculate, discreet and that I want in a restaurant like this.

We have been to the Walnut Tree many times, but this time we were slightly disappointed. The food as usual was delicious, but the dinning room was very cold and uninviting, the lights was only switched on when we were on our dessert course when...a larger party arrived. It would have been nice if they had an option of alcohol free wine to enjoy with the meal.

The food here was absolutely stunning. Outstanding quality and the home baked breads and appetiser was a lovely touch. For me the restaurant lacked atmosphere. If I was to return I would definitely ask to sit in the bar by the open fire as I...found the restaurant quite cold so take an extra layer.
