It was the most shocking and unpleasant experience I have ever had in years, let alone in a restaurant. The landlord was a bully to me and displayed a horrendous amount of aggression towards me when I sent my steak back because it was dry. The waitress was in tears because he behaved in such a disgusting manner. He insulted me over and over said he would call the police if I didn’t pay for the steak. My husband stepped in and he remained deeply unpleasant and child like. My husband and I were in such shock over his nastiness that we wrote it off to the fact that he’s just a deeply unhappy individual and he just wanted to vent on someone. We might well recommend The Wheelwright's Arms to friends because the food is very good, but with the caveat that the waiting time for service requires patience and it is fairly minimal when it happens. We also suffered from sitting at a table near the door with the accompanying blasts of cold air every time someone came in. It then had to stay open for at least ten minutes when the fire started smoking so the end of our lunch there was rather spoiled. We might go again for a beer but we wouldn't go again for a meal, even though we enjoyed the food, because of the poor service.
Really let itself down. I have had some great meals here in times past but not today. Charred black burger buns, cold raw burgers and no-one asked my guest how they wanted them. I flagged up the completely black bun offering and was told it was 'chargrilled ' and no offer to replace. I was embarrassed to have recommended the venue.
we visited an early New Year's dinner. the eating was excellent and the vegetarian options were well thought out and a departure from the usual "mushroom with a side of mushrooms", the restaurants often standard, and which I appreciated very much. the service was attentive, but not intrusive. overall a fantastic experience.

risotto was nice, dessert was disappointing, service a bit slow. total price for quality. the burning of plastic odour from the kitchen was very unpleasant.
The Good: excellent mint and mangetout risotto and a nice fish and chips with excellent home made mushy peas plus a very pleasant Pinot Grigio.

A great country pub, with contemporary styling and good food in the most beautiful of locations.
