We went to this Weinhaus on the basis of the generally favorable reviews. It is located in Old Town Mainz. We had the hotel make us a reservation. Everything went well until we were eating our first course and our waitress asked us if we would mind sharing our table (there were four of us in sort of a corner booth) with two more people. We were a bit taken aback by this request and she backed off and said never mind. We shared a nice dry Riesling to start the meal that was actually pretty good. Three of us had the pork steak Madagascar which was served with fried thinly sliced potatoes and a small green salad. It was a little dry but very tasty. The fourth had. The vegetarian ravioli which were huge and also very tasty served with cooked spinach. We had a red wine which was a blend of red grapes and was only so-so. All in all, the food was very good, the service was fine, but the wines were only mediocre.

We were delayed a day arriving in Germany and as a result missed visiting a winery. This place made up for it as they had a 'carousel of wine'. We tried 6 different varieties of local wine and sat outside at a picnic table with locals. We didn't order food but I wish we had the food looked amazing. We did buy two bottles of wine and were surprised at the prices, maybe around 7 Euro at most? We did have a small incident because we kept trying to flag down the waitress and a local grew annoyed at us. He went inside and fetched her for us. We were a bit embarrassed because of the language barrier and realizing we were annoying the locals. Either way, don't be afraid to go inside and ask for your bill.

I've been here several times with friends while in Mainz on business trips, and the food is quite good. Portions are generous, and the prices are reasonable. The service is excellent and knowledgeable. One small heads-up: The English menu translation is excellent, but not quite as comprehensive in its menu descriptions as the German-language menu -- but the German menu is written in the Mainzer (Meenzer) dialect, so it can be challenging to read even if your German is passable. Happily, the young, pleasant staff is fluent in all three, and can explain everything. Sit outside in the warm weather, and don't be surprised if you're asked to share a table. You'll probably make new friends!
