Hungry and on the road to Berlin on a holiday weekend? And most of the restaurants closed because of low business expectations due to the long weekend in an industrial town: this was our dilemma until a person at an intersection suggested the Starenkasten, the Starlings' nest and birdhouse. Located not too far from the Autobahn yet on the outskirts of Braunschweig, we almost passed by the unassuming hotel and restaurant. However, once we stepped through the door, we were warmly welcomed and seated in a manner reminding us from the good old times, though music and personnel definitely were of our days. Once we were presented with the special menu, we felt in seventh heaven, since most of us are either vegetarians or vegans. It was just the beginning of the asparagus season, something not taken lightly in that part of Germany! We all had Spargel (you guessed it, asparagus) in various forms and dishes, one as delicious as the next, some with remoulade and some "A la nature", but all cooked just right and served in generous portions. Choosing was not easy either as the menu offered close to a dozen different dishes and the very knowledgeable wait staff were very helpful to match our appetites and tastes.Ready to move on, we could well imagine what the regular meals would be like, however, we had a world to discover and miles to go.Recht vielen herzlichen Dank! Many thanks!
