Avignon has a lot of good restaurants, but this is one of the most interesting. We noticed it and made reservations, and we were glad we did. The decor is interesting and fun, but the true appeal is that this is actually a truly one-man-show operation. The server discusses the menu and then goes back into the kitchen to prepare the food, and then brings it to you. And, when you compliment the decor, you discover that he also designed all that himself.Most important, he manages to pull this off with great skill and finesse. The scallop entree was excellently prepared, the fish and meat mains were perfectly done, and dessert was a delicious and amusing affair. The informality encouraged discussions among the diners, and the owner-host-server-chef turned the evening into an enjoyable, one-of-a-kind affair. We truly recommend it. Beware, there are only a half dozen tables, so on a busy evening, reservations are a must.
This restaurant wasn't on our list, but after the Festival, most of our top choices were closed. Our host had mentioned that this was one of his favorite neighborhood restaurants, hungry and desperate, we figured why not. BEST decision. The service was fantastic! We were seated outside, and though there was only one server, not once did we feel neglected -- we were constantly checked in on to make sure we were okay. The menu looked a bit small and simple, but it was so well executed. Everything was delicious and such a good value for the quality. We shared the scallops, and it was so good, we ended up ordering another serving. For the main course, we got the osso bucco and the beef, both of which were extremely well cooked. We ended up sharing the baba au rhum for dessert as well, my husband's new favorite dish!Would definitely recommend this place, I also love that it's a bit out of the way so it was very laidback and relaxing, as opposed to some of the other places in the main city area.
We arrived in Avignon and our host recommended this restaurant. We were not disappointed. Our dinner and our service was excellent. Our server was very nice and explained the dishes to us since we do not speak French. We each tried something different and they were all good. The chef came out and said hello too! Try the macaroon,it was excellent.Would highly recommend?!
Get off the main mall and roads of Avignon and find the fabulous chef at Le Chapelier Toque. A fresh menu every evening. Creative use of seasonal produce. Talented ability to prepare meat and fish to perfection. Beautiful plating. Generous portions. Great wine list. Reasonable prices. Excellent service. What more could u want? Oh, really fun decor!
