French food can be likened to the emperors new clothes - mention it and everyone says how wonderful it is. Yes, high end French food is often excellent, but a significant proportion of everyday French food ranges from mediocre to poor, in my opinion. So much so, that when holidaying in Haute Vienne it became our preference to eat at home, where quality and taste were assured. That was until we found la Repos. Now, I would rarely eat fish and chips in the UK, due to widely varying quality. However, it has become our treat when visiting la Repos. Another beef I have (see what I did there?) is the really awful French steaks served up in many restaurant. And no, I am not insisting on them being cooked to a crisp. It is widely known that hanging beef tenderises it - and the French don't hang it. This makes ordering steaks a lottery. Even in the rare (did it again) case they do, it's not for long enough. Fortunately, if you crave a decent steak in France this is the place, as they are imported from the UK.So, good food, decent prices and all with a lake front setting. Now for the bad news, they close during the winter, so check the website before you visit.
