Le Louis XIII Réserver une table

Went last night with a friend and it's the first time either of us had been in some time. We were warmly greeted by the staff and shown to our table. Inside has an almost medieval feel but the modern furnishings didn't detract from the overall atmosphere. There was a wide selection on the menu and a good range of wines which were not too overpriced. Neither of us had heard of the potence before we so chose one beef and one veal. We could have asked the waitress but occasionally we like to be surprised. It arrived in good time and we were certainly surprised by the theatre of the presentation. Hanging off the gallows was a very hot spiked metal cylinder with my beef on one side and her veal on the other. Having made room the waiter then flambéd the meat. Rice and ratatouille were in the bowl beneath the meat and a side salad completed the dish. After all the drama we could have expected to be let down by the taste but no it was all delicious. Desserts followed and were beautifully presented. We eat out together regularly around Challans and this is one that's high on the list of favourites.

Have just been to this restaurant for lunch to celebrate my husband's birthday. We asked for the steak and duck to be cooked medium. The duck had been very briefly grilled on the outside, but the inside was raw and cold. I mentioned this to the waitress who agreed with me, but did nothing about it. The steak was not much better. Having been there some time ago and had a superb meal, this was very disappointing.

The staff were excellent at creating a relaxed atmosphere, and helped drive up anticipation of the food. The building itself is wonderful as well. But the food... that was something else! Our group had a cross section of the food: potence (including Whiskey flambéed at the table!), salads, lamb, cold meat, and steak and everyone was very happy. The price for this was also very reasonable.I couldn't more highly recommend this restaurant.

Visited for my wife's birthday lunch and shared the veal and beef potence(French for gallows) which was cooked to perfection and served to the table where it was flambé in spectacular. A true experience of authentic French cuisine.

One of our favourite restaurants in Challans. Good atmosphere and good service. Food is good value and fresh. Very welcoming to our small grandson.

We arrived for lunch, 4 adults and three children. The usual slightly complicated menu options, but once negotiated, the food was excellent. The service was friendly and quick. Nice atmosphere.

We stayed in Challans for a week in what turned out to be a disappointing hotel. Fortunately on our first evening we chose to eat at Le Louis XIII. The restaurant is an auberge which dates from 1580 and the atmosphere is very pleasant.The staff were welcoming and helpful and the service was very good. The food was delicious with good portions, beautifully prepared and presented. Although we tried other places, this was our favourite and we returned twice more. The restaurant is also a crêperie so that adds to the choice of meals on offer. A three course meal for 2 with half a litre of the house wine came to about £46 - excellent value for the quality. I would love to go back!
