The most pleasant and surprising culinary find during our last trip to Burgundy, was the fabulous La Table de Chapaize, where weary travelers dine on the creative, and very light, dishes prepared by the native Burgundian chef. She is joined by her partner charged with welcoming guests and serving the beautifully prepared food. She greets guests with a warm reception, and highly useful descriptions of the local wine and locally sourced produce. This small restaurant is open every day for lunch and dinner, (except Monday and Thursdays) when many other restaurants in the area are closed, especially off season. Choices are limited but extraordinary. Heirloom tomatoes were enhanced with a tiny pinch of sea salt, with dots of homemade pesto and a chevre mousse decorating the plate and pleasing the palate. This was followed by a delicious halibut filet topped with a crust of fresh herbs arranged on a bed of tomato coulis. For dessert we shared one of the best pastries ever -- roasted figs on pate brisee base topped with a vanilla ice cream. The figs were nestled on an almond cream, all elements created with just enough sugar to heighten -- but not overwhelm -- the taste of the ingredients. We were so pleased by our lunch we returned to following day, and again, were very content with the offerings. My husband was ecstatic over the calves liver, lightly covered with a fruit-based sauce and accompanied by tiny local potatoes. The crab galette, a revisited French version of crab cakes, provided an excellent starter and at this lunch we each ordered the fig tarte. For us, the greatest pleasure was watching these talented women create a culinary experience for all their guests. La Table de Chapaize is a labor of love and it shows in so many ways, to everyone’s delight.

I have been at this restaurant several times. Despite being located in the minuscule village of Chapaize in Bourgogne, this restaurant has been consistently excellent and a very worth detour from the main road going North-South (Chalon-sur-Saone to Macon) in the region. The place is small and requires booking in advance, at least the day before on week-ends. I have tried several dishes and they were all consistently delicious. Especially nice is the friendly lady (the owner, I believe) that has always a good hint for pairing their dishes with an appropriate local wine. Follow her advice! The prices are very reasonable and the quiet atmosphere of the small village is almost surreally calm. After a nice dinner, take a stroll along the small roads leading to nearby villages, and life will look very different!

This restaurant is a delight and a must-visit! The ambiance was delightful. Our lunch was absolutely "impeccable!" The chef is extremely talented and her food was unique, complex and delicate. Her partner, who managed "front of the house" recommended a dish that was not on the menu (with a very helpful and detailed description) and we were thrilled that we followed her recommendation. We enjoyed the opportunity to share our appreciation of the lunch with them afterward.

Daring to go for vegetarian dishes in a Burgundy restaurant with only 2 menu selections tells the story. This is a creative chef who's not afraid to go off the beaten track. This restaurant in the cosy village of Chapaize exceeded our expectations. The welcome is warm, friendly and professional. The menu is limited, very reasonably priced but really excellent. We would certainly recommend it to our friends!
