But inside the typical French agricultural building is a bijou restaurant with very appealing ambience run by husband and wife team, and , I assume, one helper in the kitchen - but maybe they do it all themselves! this in quiet Charente countryside, never overrun with tourists, indeed they are rare outside the season. This is a small restaurant (my guess is the barn and cottage were always a single building with two fuctions, quite common for a rural dwelling in SW France.Key is the small menu of the day which, nonetheless, allows considerable choice. Husband is server, very friendly and eager to help make your choices. Not surprisingly there is a time lag before the arrival of the food, though not, of course, the drink. Since we had our daughter Elissa with us who was not drinking and since one of us would be driving home we opted for a carafe of white, which was drinkable but only just. The sole item in the whole lunch which wasn't very good.My wife and I each chose a slab of meat (which we seldom eat at home), I went for beef, Simone for lamb, and we shared anyway. The meat was rare, as requested, very lean and tasty. The portions bordering on over generous in all courses, which all relate to a menu where you can have every course without financial increments. All three of us have eaten around the world, so we are not a push-over.We were just looking for a pleasant family lunch we didn't have to prepare and what we got was far better than that. We'll be back and wouldn't be surprised to be awarding straight 'A' s next time.Stephen Phillips
