Before I start this review I want to say that I visited this restaurant on the recommendation of several friends and I live locally, therefore my review is based on my extensive knowledge of what's available locally. We arrived to meet friends at La Tomate du Jardin at 12.45. There seemed to be some confusion as to which table was ours (we had reserved, but were shown to a table in the garden), our friends arrived at 1pm. It was 1.20 before anyone asked us if we wanted a drink !! We eventually got a drink about another 10 mins later. The menu for this restaurant is on a large chalk board attached to the building so we had looked at that on arrival. Another 15mins went by and we were asked for our orders. We also asked for a Carte du Vin, we did get that promptly but no wine appeared until we reminded them (when the starters were on the table) that we had ordered wine ! OK onto the food .... both myself and my husband ordered a starter of Grilled Crevettes with a saffron Mousse at 9 euros each! What a disappointment .... 3 small grilled prawns each , and the plate filled up with trimmings !!! Very poor and certainly not an acceptable portion for 9 euros. We then go to main courses .... I ordered the Faux Fillet ... which was chewy .... the good part was the fresh veg on the plate .... unusual to have such a selection in this part of France.... again this course was over priced at 19 euros. My husband has the chicken dish with wild mushrooms ... his view OK nothing special, and a very small portion for the money, (17 euros). Deserts are all priced at 7.50 euros .... I had the Bavois with apricot ... nice and my husband 3 small balls of local ice cream which was again really poor value. The wine we selected was a Pinot Noir which can be bought locally for around 6 euros ... the restaurant was charging 25 euros! Service was slow and disorganised ... we even had to go into the restaurant to order coffee and in total this meal for four people took over 3 hrs !! When the bill came at 98 euros for the 2 of us, we were left feeling very disappointed both in terms of the quality, service and portion sizes. This restaurant is located in a small town. Yes the garden is pleasant but its next to a main road. The restaurant has recently been refurbished but they have a long way to go before they can justify charging the prices they do for such an 'average' meal. In contrast we eat in a 2 star Michelin restaurant in Toulouse for 55 euros a head for 3 courses, amusée bouche wine and coffee ... La Tomate du Jardin is trying to punch way above its weight ..... not sure we will try it again.
