We arrived on a busy Saturday evening with no booking, and the downstairs part of the restaurant was full. However, the friendly staff led us up a winding staircase to another part of the restaurant where there was additional seating. We really enjoyed our three course meals for 18 euros per person. I had Pain perdu au saumon fume, followed by Pave de Rumsteak, and then Fondant au chocolat for dessert. My companions enjoyed other options from the menu and we agreed it was a superb meal in a great 'oldy worldy' setting.

Our final night of our holiday, spending a week in Dol de Bretagne, this restaurant was booked for a birthday, but unfortunately became a remembrance of a close friend who was here previously. A superb location, and superb food cooked on the open fire, there was six in our group and absolutely everyone enjoyed the food, typical French fare with a touch of class, and great attention to presentation detail. The chef came from the kitchen and spoke to the customers at every table which I think says something special about the restaurant, as an added bonus the wine was also wonderful, I hope we can come back here again in the future.

I visited with friends who had been before. It has an open fire place where they cook the meat/fish. Be warned the menu is wholly in French but the owner does speak a little English. We had steak and house Merlot which was both delicious and good value.

We decided to try this place up a side street. It has great ambiance including an ancient narrow stone spiral staircase to the upper level. We were sat next to the huge open fireplace which was burning low. We discovered its main use on the night was to cook the meat! Chefs came out and grilled the various meat selections over the fire and then finished plating in the kitchen. We had excellent main course meals (meat - yes!). Come dessert though, and it was disappointing, with a 'fondant' chocolate actually being a slice of very dry chocolate tart with some choc sauce drizzled on it - not great and we didn't finish it. The service was OK but a bit standoffish. The service and dessert make it an average score for me, but that said the main was very good and the prices were very reasonable.

For us a novelty to see our meal being cooked on an open wood fire! The menu was varied and the food excellent as to preparation and presentation. I have never eaten so large a steak! The four of us had different hors d'oeuvres and entrées: all were splendid, as too wine and coffee. Given that in some place in France the fast-food bug seems popular, it is refreshing to find a real restaurant -- not that the service was slow! The setting is engagingly and genuinely antique.Le Porche au Pain is one of several fine restaurants in Dol and should certainly be on one's eating itinerary when there.

Excellent food and service . We ate delicious pork cooked over an open fire in front of us. Good choice on the menu . It was rather hot with the open fire as it was summer, so don't sit too near! The staff were very hardworking and attentive. Lovely historic building in central Dol de Bretagne No criticism at all,. would certainly go there again

Dol de Bretagne is a lovely market town full of various restaurants, but I have to admit that we stumbled upon this one randomly in the rain when turning in a small alley... And sometimes you get lucky. Le Porche au Pain is a lovely local restaurant set in a fantastic medieval building with an open fire, on which some of your food will be actually cooked for you!Great menu full of fresh local produce, nice wine selection and a fantastic service. The seafood skewers are to die for.I'm certainly planning to return the next time I'm in the area.

We make a pilgrimage to this restaurant whenever we are in Brittany and also recommend it to friends who are passing this way. The lunchtime menu is very good and the food is cooked to perfection. The chef always has time to great customers and the staff are very friendly and efficient. Will return next year..
