The owners are sisters Mary and Emily who come from a large family of restaurateurs. They make you welcome from the moment you enter. The food and decor are very simple but elegant. Service is enjoyable and not rushed. Good wines. One does not expect this level of cuisine in such a small town. Definitely the best restaurant in La Charite and we missed it on our first 4 visits. There is also a lovely patio in the shadow of the gothic cathedral..

Relaxed atmosphere, good menu options. I recommend the Assiette Gourmande for desert, you get 3 puddings in one. Great place to eat outside in the summer, we were warmly welcomed this winter lunchtime.

Visited by chance while staying at the nearby campsite. Fantastic food and whilst not cheap, great value for money. Lovely staff and setting. A great early evening treat

We were lucky to get a table for lunch - the last one on a Friday afternoon in mid-December. The restaurant is small -only 10-12 small tables, and is housed in a medieval building on a small but lovely square. The food, chosen from the 23 euro menu was superb. The foie gras melted in my mouth, and the fish entree, with asparagus, radish and roasted potatoes (in a butter sauce) were equally tasty. I had a glass of the local Sancerre red wine. We skipped the dessert, as we were too full for more. Service was exceptional. Our rather young waiter serviced the entire room with a smile, competence and at just the right speed. Excellent value. Highly recommended.

We stopped nearby on our canal boat holiday. We found the food and service very good. The terrine was excellent as an entre and the beef tartare was excellent too. Service was good. Wine list small but adequate. We were able to get a taxi (David) from our mooring to and fro which was good as the canal is around 3km away from the town. Would recommend.

one of La Charite's top restos - central, easy to deal with and, most importantly the menu and the product were superbe. Don't miss it.

The setting for La Poule Noire could not easily be bettered. Outside the tables are immediately in front of the extraordinary tympanum of the Cluniac monastery. Inside the stone and wood surroundings lend a cosy charm to the proceedings. The food is fine and not expensive for the quality. Good wine list filled with all the local names - Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé - you would expect.
