We took my sister and brother in law from New Zealand for a day out in Les Sables, home of the Round the World single handed yacht race Vendée Globe, which this year will feature a Kiwi competitor. After a walk round the more accessible parts of the Marina, we took a walk along the eponymous sands (les sables), and then along the south side of the Quai Garnier. We looked for a restaurant for lunch, and my brother in law wanted French Mussels, to compare with the New Zealand species. The first restaurant we tried, although advertising them, were all out of Mussels Tuesday lunch time, and only had a single overcrowded toilet. We then found La Maree which was more welcoming, had good toilet facilities and plenty of fresh local mussels. Although it was a sunny day (the last of May) there was a stiff North Easterly breeze, so we elected to sit in doors. My brother in law enjoyed his mussels, which are smaller than the Green Lipped New Zealand variety, I started with Soupe de Poisson, then my sister and I had the Formule du Jour (two courses including catch of the day) for Euros 13.90 and my wife fillet of Sea Bass which was fresh and well cooked. We shared a local Vendéan white wine (Pissotte) and half a litre of Badoit. My Post Office credit card was charged £73.06 We all had a good reasonable lunch and the staff were friendly and helpful.
