During our trip to Marseille, we had already eaten at a number of very fine restaurants which had set a high bar. L'Arome was open on a Monday night (which was somewhat of a rarity) and not trusting my utterly insufficient French enough to make...a reservation over the phone, we turned up at to see if they could squeeze us in. We noted that by when we left, the restaurant was really busy and so a reservation is sensible. The waitress was wonderfully helpful in explaining the menu which was printed only in French and recommending some wines to accompany our meal (all were local, reasonably priced and quintessentially how I imagined drinking wine in the south of France to be). All the produce was seasonal, local and fresh which meant the menu had options for each of the starter, main and desserts (a small restaurant with a large menu always leaves me somewhat trepidatious in any case). We both had a fish ravioli with a prawn and sea bass fillet to start. The seafood tasted that way that only the freshest seafood does, the pasta had a beautiful al dente bite and the flavours were outrageously delicious. I have eaten few better dishes in my lifetime. Our mains were not small portions with plenty of meat and subtly complementary accompaniments and sauces. As the first bite of pork rib melted in my mouth, I was left wondering if it was possible to ever love another dish of food quite so much. We hadn't planned on the dessert, but neither of us wanted this meal to ever end and so we persevered with sumptuously delicately flavoured sweets that did not disappoint. There are few things in life that I would like to experience more than eating this meal again for the first time. We could not recommend more highly.
